4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book With Hard to Build Model, August 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Roman Ship Model (Candle Discovery Series) (Hardcover)
This model is NOT something a child will be able to build my himself! Our family bought this to go along with a Sunday school lesson (the one about Paul's shipwreck), and my 12 year old son wanted to build the model. He is a somewhat experienced model builder, but he absolutely could not figure this out. My husband (who is very good at that sort of thing) wound up building it, but the word he used to describe it was "diabolical." The model has many tiny parts and uses much glue and even some string. It took the two of us working together around 6 hours to put it together. Once it was done, it looked really cool, though. I used it as a prop in my lesson, and kids of all ages (kindergarten to 5th grade ) loved it. It's 3 dimensional and even has a hole in the deck with a ladder going down into it so you can kind of see into the hold. The book is interesting and has lots of useful info. about the type of boat and the Bible story it relates to. I would recommend this as long as the buyer realized the model is not something the average child could put together easily, and probably most children would need a lot of help with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Way to Make the Bible Come Alive for Your Kids!, February 21, 2012
This review is from: Roman Ship Model (Candle Discovery Series) (Hardcover)
I recently stumbled upon the Candle Discovery Series.... and now I'm hooked! We started out with the Solomon's Temple Model and Book Set, and we just finished this Roman Ship Model. I was so excited to review it and build it with my kiddos!

We had so much fun going through the book and building the model. We learned a lot more about Roman ships by building a replica hands-on than we could grasp by simply reading about it in God's word. The model was very detailed--even parts that were covered up once it was finished had the finest detail. The book itself had large, beautiful, full-color photos and illustrations. It's a nice hard cover and is something we'll reference for many years down the road. I think the price is definitely worth it for a hard cover book & a detailed, durable model like the one we built!

After we finished building the model, my kids enjoyed hours and hours of playing with it. It came with numerous cardboard characters--enough for all of them to have 2 or 3 to act out.

I must admit, I did most of the building myself as we talked about what life was like for Paul the Apostle as he journeyed on Roman ships just like this one. What an awesome way to bring the Word of God alive! (By the way, my kiddos are 7 and under--they had a lot of fun helping me punch out the pieces and playing with it, but they're too little to build it themselves.)

There are also other Model & Book sets in the Candle Discovery Series including Solomon's Temple Model and Book & a Tabernacle Model. That last one is still on my to-get list! They make a really great addition to any homeschooling history class or to arts & crafts time for any family interested in bible history. Definitely makes the bible come alive & would certainly make an exciting birthday gift! I can't recommend the Candle Discovery Series enough.
