A remix album worth buying,
By

I was hesitant to buy this album. Remix records usually disappoint me. I rarely hear remixes that are truly inventive. Here, the songs are completely restructured in a way that they almost become brand new songs. Amazing beats and effects compliment the bass and drums perfectly, they don't overpower the songs. I've never heard remixes so effective. It's almost as enjoyable to listen to this as the original album. This album will definitely appeal to both remix enthusiasts and also to people like me who usually bypass this sort of release. In addition to 11 remixes, it includes 2 UK b-sides. I highly recommend it and feel that it's essential to all DFA collections.

The B-sides aren't that great, I can understand why they were never released, but I really did enjoy the album. The Remixes are really well put together, a few are pretty crappy, but none just say the song is remixed when the DJ just sped up the track and added a louder beat. These DJs all had a creative outlook on each song they remixed and made completely different songs out of them.

Not bad, but needs more variety.,

This is a pretty solid remix album. I'm not one for remixes normally, but this album really opens up a different aspect of DFA1979's talent. On "I'm a Woman, You're a Machine" DFA1979 sounds mostly like a distorted mess of rock music, which, to an extent, is what it is. On this album, however, you can hear the lead singer's voice a lot better and it really give you a whole new admiration for the group's talent (the Alan Braxe & Fred Falke Remix of "Black History Month" is a prime example of this).
However, as a whole, the album just gets too repetitive since most of the tracks are just remixes of the same two tracks. They are really good tracks, and really good remixes, but the album would work more listening to one song at a time then listening through the whole thing. If you're a huge DFA1979 fan then I can't imagine you being too disappointed with it in small doses. I'm not. The B-Sides should've stayed that way. They're "alright" at best. But check it out, see what you think.

It's a shame that this was the Death From Above album that made it onto the Billboard charts (#22, top electronic albums). If you don't like electronic music, DON'T BUY THIS ALBUM. If you don't already know, DFA '79 is an indie punk band that split after one record, You're A Woman, I'm A Machine, and they actually sound absolutely nothing like most of the songs on this album. I don't know why they only put two of their b-sides on here, when "We Don't Sleep At Night" and their cover of Bloc Party's "Luno" were actual b-sides to the band's singles. The two b-sides that are on the album, "Better Off Dead" and "You're Lovely (But You've Got Lots Of Problems)," are actually very good, but not quite worth spending twelve bucks on. This was especially hard to listen to because it's literally the same three songs over and over, but with different noises thrown in. I was quite disappointed when I found out that two of the remixes were actually remixed by the band (MSTRKRFT is Jesse, the bassist, and Girl On Girl is the alias of Sebastien, the drummer/lead singer). It bothered me that when they split, instead of creating two new cool indie punk bands, they both went after careers in electronic music. What a waste of talent.

Terrible,
This review is from: Romance Bloody Romance (Audio CD)
This is most unlistenible album of 2005. I love " You're a Woman, I'm a Machine", but the remixes are terrible. It's as if this record was made just so they could put something else out. Not a single track is standible for it's entire length.
A remix changes a song and creates something else, but these remixes rip apart what is good about Death From Above 1979 and offer nothing in it's place. |
