voice of an angel . . .,
By Sterling Morris (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Romance / Date With Jane Powell (Audio CD)
As far as I am concerned, the young Jane Powell had the voice of an angel. These recordings almost move one to tears. I had not heard them in many years. Where are voices like this now? Are there any? Does anyone look for them . . . If they are found, does anyone give a damn? The sound on this CD is clear and warm . . . for once they (?) didn't monkey around with the sound as was done with the recent Rosemary Clooney CD of White Christmas and Red Garters. I played the album for some friends of mine . . . all in their early 40's and they were spellbound. We're just not used to this stuff.

The Superb Jane Powell,
By Donald L. Gray (Falls Church, VA United States) - See all my reviews

A wonderous musical experience. Nowhere have I heard a suprano voice so beautifully exercised, modulated, and controlled. Most of these songs were new to me, but I listened enraptured. Such phrasing, diction, inflection, and hitting those high notes accurately and without hesitation. Her vocal control and timbre are truly suberb. The selections couldn't have been better chosen to display Jane's beautiful voice.

Voice of an angel,

Jane Powell has the voice of an angel, the personality of an angel to go with it. Seeing her in action was the best entertainment one could hope to go see. Her dancing was energized and never did she miss a beat. Her acting was great. I wish more of her work was on DVD, especially her movies, and any of the plays from Broadway. Do yourself a favor buy this album, and learn to hear what a real soprano sounds like. I love her and would recommend anything she has done. Jane's mark is quite unique. A powerhouse of sound like none other

A DATE WITH JANE POWELL,
By W.V.SNEAZWELL (MOUNT DANDENONG, VICTORIA Australia) - See all my reviews

It's a tragedy that we have had to wait over 50 years to hear these two old classic LP's from Columbia on CD. Jane Powell was a mere teenager when she recorded these beautiful songs, many by Victor Herbert. It's a joy to hear them again in wonderful arrangements by Carmen Dragon who also conducts the orchestra. The sound is good though obviously not up to today's standards. The maturity of Jane's clear, ringing soprano is amazing for one so young and one can only lament the fact that she never recorded much more of this type of music.

A very clear and vibrant voice in charming personality,

This could be a very nice vehicule for Jane's clear and vibrant soprano voice. Her diction is impeccable and she uses her voice marvelously with delicate inflections to give expressions to phrases in the musical line.

Jane Powell began making movies while still a teenager, with perhaps her first major success being "A Date with Judy", and it was evident from the beginning that this young lady, apart from possesing a very lively personality, also had a very mature and magnificent coloratura soprano voice. The CD titled Jane Powell brings together many of the songs for which she is best known, and combines the tracks of two long play (LP) records, "Romance" and "A Date With Jane". The MGM musicals of this period provided her with the ideal opportunity to show the world her glorious coloratura soprano voice. Definitely a 5 star rating.
