Editorial Reviews

This album, David's first for Arista, was withheld from the American market upon its original release in 1985. Which, one suspects, may have sparked some second-guessing in the label's corporate suites after it scored a Top Ten hit in the UK with "The Last Kiss," which featured George Michael on vocals. "he Knows All about Boys" was a European smash as well, while the album itself went to #20 on the British charts. Romance is also notable for being the only '80s release from the former Partridge Family teen idol, and for the production and songwriting work of Alan Tarney (a-ha, Squeeze, Leo Sayer, Matthew Sweet). Nevertheless, this reissue marks the first time Romance has been released in any form in the U.S. Mike Ragogna's liner notes place this long-lost recording in context of Cassidy's one-of-a-kind career.

His first was Cherish, way back in 1972. But this contemporary album at its time in 1985 was electrifying!
His comeback single 'The Last Kiss' in February 1985 went to UK No.6 in the charts, then followed this Album. Released in May 1985 it made UK No.20 in the album chart. 'Romance' and 'Someone' were also singles as well as various 12" mixes. The resulting album was brilliant, a fantastic sound produced by Alan Tarney. It was released by Arista Records in Europe and the Far East only; On LP, Cassette and Compact Disc. As it was a digital recording by Arista/MLM, it was David's first ever CD. And was only available for three years until late 1988 when it was deleted. I originally purchased the LP, then the CD in 1988 when I bought my first CD player. I still play this often. Now after over two decades since the 'Romance' album was deleted is has at long last been reissued on CD especially in the US. Alot of fans in the US and elsewhere who have never listened to this album will be surprised by how refreshing and unique the electrifying high energy upbeat/ballad sound from the 1980s.

I remember when David Cassidy returned to the UK in early 1985 and appeared on numerous TV shows to promote his comeback single 'The Last Kiss' and his follow up singles, then his Romance Album. The promo videos for 'The Last Kiss' & 'Romance' were superb! Incidently you could check them out on Youtube.

Track Listing: Romance; Touch By Lightning; The Last Kiss; Thin Ice; Someone; The Letter; Heart Of Emotion; Tenderly; She Knows About Boys; Remember Me.

It is interesting to know some facts about some of the songs; George Michael did backing vocals on 'The Last Kiss' and Cliff Richard did a cover version of 'Remember Me' two years later on his 'Always Guaranteed' Album/Single.

This album has been overlooked for so long, so many times....even TV biographies on David (including his own TV movie!) basically ignore anything he had to do from 1980-1989, acting like he was wandering the streets asking for handouts. HARDLY the case, he was very busy and in the middle of the 80's he teamed up with super producer Alan Tarney for this album. It is a shame it has been out of print for so long, but now those absurd $300+ auctions and bootlegs can end. The original album, as it was. No extra tracks, but there were numerous 12" singles put out and all of them had different versions of songs here. Still, you get what you need right here.

The liner notes here graciously acknowledge George Michael and Basia for their contributions, but what isn't mentioned is the fact that production for "The Last Kiss" essentially recycles Tarney's work with Cliff Richard for "Young Love" in 1982. They slowed the song down & applied the new lyrics. Tarney did that alot when producing, his own version of "Mash Up" before there was such a thing...likewise, "Remember Me" on this Cassidy album shows up a couple years later on a Cliff Richard album with a different tempo & lyrics (if you're a fan of Alan Tarney's work, tell me Cliff Richard couldn't have taken a-ha's "Take On Me" to the top!!)...Tarney was amazing and Cassidy is in top form on "Romance".

Don't wait and let it slip by out of print again. A strong companion to this is "His Greatest Hits Live" on Starblend from 1986, both the CD and the video. His rocking version of The Beach Boys "Darlin'" is flawless.

There are "essential albums of the 80's" and "ESSENTIAL ALBUMS OF THE 80's!"...this is the latter.

I can't understand why Arista did not release this album in the USA. All most all of the songs are potential singles. Yes, the album has an eighties flare, but David is at his best singing from his soul. The rock critics have to finally realize how multi-talented David is. The fact is he has one of the best voices of our generation.....just listen to Romance....you will not be disappointed.
This album ranks right up there with his RCA albums, which all Cassidy fans know were some of his best performances.

Romance released in 1985 was only released in the UK and Europe. It was never released in the U.S.. This marks the first time the album has ever been reissued and the first time it has ever had a U.S. release. For decades finding this album in the U.S. has been like finding a needle in the haystack. The LP would turn up occasionally but if you wanted this release on one of the few CD's that were pressed of it in 1985 you could have expected to pay upwards of $200 or more for it. Well real gone music has saved the day finally making this one available to us on CD and at a great price! David scored a top 20 hit in the UK with the song the last kiss on this release. David is in top form and this is one of the best of his solo albums. If you are a fan of David Cassidy I would suggest you pick up a copy of this release while you can still get it. I suspect this will be the one and only chance we will have to get this one a CD. Great Album at a Great Price, Get it while you can.

I bought the LP version of this recording in Germany back in the 1980's. It was an incredible album and, although I've loved Mr. Cassidy's recordings since I was a kid, this was easily my favorite. It's so nice to finally get this in CD format. They've been selling the original CD pressings from Europe on EBAY for upwards of a hunrdred dollars for years! Why this was never available in the US is a mystery. I highly recommend this collection of music. Mr. Cassidy's always been an under-rated talent capable of so much more than what is known to most folks. Simply great!
