2.0 out of 5 stars a deception and certainly not the best!, February 11, 2000
This review is from: Romance (Audio CD)
Most of the adagios presented in this record were recorded when A.S Mutter did not achieve the full maturity she has today when playing violin. My highest disappointment was with the Tchaikowsky concerto second mouvement which is so slow and lifeless especially at the initial phase. The most recent recorded are Legends of Wienawski, Thais of Massenet and Berceuse of Faure with definitely some improvement what is not surprising. For your information the adagio of Mozart concerto was recorded in 1978 (A.S Mutter was 15 years old)when the most recent were in 1995. For persons who are looking romantic violin adagio of most famous concertos it is highly recommended to return to some interpretations which are the reference like the one with D.Oistrakh or Heifetz to list two of them. Fortunately, A.S Mutter made excellent production in the Mozart first Concerto with Marriner (five stars)or in duo with Weissenberg in the Brahms sonates (five stars also). But definitely, this one is not the best record ever!I would recommend instead Vignettes of Nathan Milstein to stay in the same violin category.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best performance of Meditation from Thais, May 30, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Romance (Audio CD)
Massenet's Meditation from Thais played so gorgeously and movingly, it's like hearing it for the first time. It's also presented with beautiful warm sound and sensitive accompaniment. The tracks which are performances with James Levine are excellent. The ones with the aging Karajan, however, are marked by excellent violin solos by Mutter but with dull orchestral accompaniment. To her credit, she maintains her magical touch in all the recordings. Get it for the Meditation and the Legende. They're exceptional. As for the Brahms, you may want to look for her more recent recording with a different conductor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, June 23, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Romance (Audio CD)
Regardless of what age Ms.Mutter was when these tracks were recorded, they are drop-dead aurally gorgeous. Melancholy. Some heart-rending.Just like a romance.

You cannot go wrong with this compilation. This would be a wonderful first classical CD for anyone who has suddenly discovered that classical music gets into your soul and never lets go.
