Sylphs and salamanders,

This in an historical novel about young Jacques Tournebrouche (Jack Turnspit), whose mentor is the Abbe Jerome Coignard. They work for an alchemist, translating manuscripts for him. The alchemist tells them wild tales of sylphs and salamanders, beings who never actually appear. Jacques falls in love with a Jewish girl who lives with her uncle in the mansion of the alchemist. His adventures take a turn for the worse. Coignard is wanted for murder, but is himself murdered. The mansion is destroyed by fire. But Jacques returns to his parents and becomes a bookseller.
