5.0 out of 5 stars ROTK8 - Constantly Getting Better and Better, October 14, 2003

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 is an excellent game. Like ROTK7, you can play any character in the game rather than just the ruler. The game follows the magic of the book, which heros that have herculean strength and some even have magical abilities. Significant characters from the previous games have had their abilities changed to better reflect the book which the game is based. For example, Cao Cao have great Charm, Political wisdom and intelligence, but him war experience is somewhat average, reflecting the fact that he was more of a strategist than a front line soldier.
I only had a few problems with the game. Titles, which officers could be given as the ruler's rank increased in ROTK7 have been removed. I liked being able to give my officers different titles. Also, I think there should be more intrigue in the game. Hardly any officers rebel against their rulers and start their own kingdom, only happening when the ruler dies and even that is rare.
Overall, this game is excellent and well worth the time of playing it. If you like Koei style strategy games, you will love this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars An epic historical adventure, November 6, 2003

Bilbo Baggins "mighty hobbit" (Land of Dwarves and Hobbits) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 (Video Game)
First off, let me start by saying this game is NOT for the attention deficient set. It is slow and and hard to get into. Even I had a hard time getting into it at first. You can only wage war once every three months which makes it hard to build momentum when you have to go to war, then stop and invest or farm or some other domestic concern. I think they put this feature in so that players would actually have to focus on domestic concerns instead of just going to war constantly which is what I did in most of the other games. Still, I enjoyed it once I got into it.
I am at a loss at why I love this game. It is certainly not good looking graphic wise. There are a lot of moments where there could have been graphics to illuminate the situation but weren't the most prominent being the officer banquet. It would have been nice to see a little picture showing officers eating or something. The gameplay is about as fast paced as the diary of ann frank but still it draws me in. I suppose it brings out the plotter and schemer in me. There's nothing cooler than convincing a rival general to defect during battle and then turning the tables on your rival. Another cool thing is the ability to develop your character from an average schmo to an awesome all around officer although unlike Romance 7 you can only improve your character so far. Like Romance 7 you can play as any officer. It is fun to rise through the ranks though it can be frustrating as well. Especially when your ruler turns down all your proposals.
A nice feature of the game is the ability to marry people although that can be a hard event to trigger without some helpful hints from the internet. As usual you can create your own officer. You have a lot more options when creating your officer such as assigning them different personalities. And if you collect all the special items in the game then you can make super powerful officers that are a match even for the elite generals like Zhou yu or Zhuge Liang.
Another new feature is the inclusion of 'tactics', which are skills that can be used on the battlefield. These tactics become a key part of battles, so much so that with the right tactics a small army can put a much larger one to route. Because of this the battles often decided not by numbers but tactics.
Finally, I say that if you like strategy games then you might like this, although you might want to try Dynasty tactics if you like war but don't like doing things like repairing walls and harvesting grain or if you like flashy pretty eye candy graphics. You might also want to give Romance 7 a hot if you like this game but don't like waiting three months every time you want to go to war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take over Ancient China., August 15, 2003

Some people play Halo. Some people play Counter-Strike. If you're a strategy fan, you're now playing Romance of the 3 Kingdoms 8. Released on August 12, 2003, Koei added a new title to their longest-running series. If you're familiar with, and enjoyed, previous titles in the Ro3K series, 8 is a perfect choice for you. If you're into games with fast paced action, walk right by. Fans of PC-style strategy games like Civilization and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri will be right at home with Ro3K8.

The game is very, very deep with tons of replay value. If you're an armchair general, get this game.
