Book Description

October 18, 1993
Many avid romance readers harbor dreams of becoming published romance writers themselves--and this is the book they need. Contains the names of current acquisition editors at major romance publishing houses; a complete listing of agents who specialize in romance; and listings of romance magazines, writers' publications, and more.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Basically, this is a directory of agents and publishing houses (which can be found in Literary Agents of North America and Literary Market Place, respectively). However, Paludan does profile the companies most interested in romance fiction and offers tips and information not to be found in the aforementioned titles. She queried publishers concerning their recently published works, specific requirements for various imprints, submissions guidelines, etc. She covers the magazine market as well as such organizations as the Romance Writers of America and the Authors Guild. This manual can serve the novice and the pro and, possibly, even go a distance toward sparing publishers from the onslaught of unprofessional-looking, misdirected manuscripts. Denise Perry Donavin

4.0 out of 5 stars Good resources, some drawbacks, June 25, 2000
This book has a lot of good points - writer's tip sheets, suggestions, markets that not everyone has heard of.

However, there are some drawbacks. The most notable comes from the sheer volitility of the publishing market - editors rotate, move around, leave jobs, etc. And writers, using a contact name several months or years old will look foolish to the people they are trying to impress with their proffesionalism. The other drawback I found was in incorrect information. For example, they list president names of RWA chapters. Only the person they listed as my chapter president hadn't been president for more than three years. In another spot, they list a phone number for a publisher. I called to have a tip sheet sent to me. Only, it was an incorrect number.

I felt the drawbacks, though, were merely inherent in the style of book. I would, therefore, still recommend it to a writer trying to break into the market.

1.0 out of 5 stars Minimal at best, March 19, 2009
I was very disappointed in this book, whose reputation has apparently been exaggerated. It was minimal information at best--nothing I couldn't have gotten from the FAQs section of the Harlequin website.

Liisa L. (Fairbanks, Alaska) - See all my reviews
Romance Writer's Pink Pages : The Insider's Guide to Getting Your Romance Novel Published (1996/97) is an excellent reference for the fledgling romance writer, a 'must have.' The Pink Pages gives the guidelines and criteria of what the romance publishers are looking for in a manuscript, as well as names and addresses of publishers, for everything from novels to short stories.
