5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Stunning!, April 3, 2008
By

Absolutely stunning! This exquisite compilation of neo-romantic works are featured on this first time ever double-disc concert saxophone recording. Banaszak's warmth from the saxophone is a perfect compliment for the opulent sounds of the Beethoven Academy Orchestra. The long overdue orchestral version of Bozza's "Aria" is an absolutely gorgeous ending to this set. You definitely don't want to miss the Hovhaness or the Morgan who has made my personal favorite contribution. Sit back, grab something nice to drink, and hit random on your CD player. You will definitely want to enjoy this one with a friend. This recording will inspire saxophonists and musicians of all levels to strive for excellence. Whether you are a classical lover, jazz enthusiast, or a movie score buff, this recording is a "must have!"

5.0 out of 5 stars A CD for all listeners, May 13, 2008
This review is from: Romances for Saxophone & Orchestra (Audio CD)
I agree with what Alan Durst had to say about Romances, so I'll add on some new thoughts. Romances will surly be a staple in every saxophonists CD collection but I believe this CD will also please anyone that likes good music. So often classical saxophone albums feature works that display the technical ability of the saxophonist and it has caused some listeners to think that the saxophone is only capable of being played rapidly. Greg Banaszak displays his artistic maturity on every track. His tone is simply beautiful. The quality of this double disc is not limited to just the soloist. The orchestra, the compositions, the interpretation and the quality of the recording make this CD enjoyable on every level. I enjoy all of the tracks but Morgan's "Three Vignettes" particularly stands out. The cello solo at the beginning gets my attention every time. The cascading lines in the third movement are beautiful against the rhumba rhythms. From film scores to concerti, transcriptions to new compositions, this CD contains great music performed very well. If you're a trained musician or someone who listens to NPR on your way to work, I can confidently recommend Romances for Saxophone and Orchestra for your CD collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, November 10, 2008
By
Bryan Hannaford (Cleveland Heights, OH United States) - See all my reviews

This album far surpasses Mr. Banaszak's Saxophone Concertos. This album is just beautiful. The strings are masterful, and make this CD worthy of the double disc price and length of listen time. The Villa-Lobos is by far the most interesting with 8 celli scored magnificently. Mr. Banaszak's performance on the Raman "Appasianato" is breathtaking. The depth of sound brought by the orchestra are matched perfectly with the warm and rich sound's of the saxophone. Saxophonist and connoisseurs of vibrant sound and color from one of the worlds most popular instruments in a different light should make this a part of their collection.
