Sercular music by a clergyman, June 21, 2000
One rare case in music history is Juan del Encina(1469-1529).Spanish poet, composer, dramatist, and clergyman who had the protection of three popes... Poetry and musical composition for him were a "back to back" thing,as he would use his poems as text for many of his villancicos and romances.A large number of his works appear in the "Cancionero de Palacio"...This recording by Hesperion XX and Jordi Savall, gives us the opportunity to listen to how he combined so well music, and poetry...The rare thing about the music of Del Encina is that being a clergyman there are no sacred works accredited to him....

Dark, very dark ... with little spurts of light, November 1, 2010
This review is from: Romances & Villancicos: Salamanca 1496 (Audio CD)
This is a remarkable collection. The initial track sets the tone for the Reconquist theme in a striking manner. What we hear is not the original melody but another which captures the feeling of uncertainty of the losers in the face of a conquering, vengeful army. The percussion is nothing less than an accompaniment for the confusion of the funeral of the old order. VThe feeling is very skillfully portrayed by Pedro's skillful use of loud/soft strokes. Suddenly, all changes and we hear the actual melody. It is stridant and will not be stopped. The percussion is subtle, but it pushes the vocals along. It is the new order taking back its homeland. The enunciation of some verses is very pointed and the overall effect is captivating. The weak point in the album is the grand recitation. (Weak if your Spanish is as 'good' as mine.) The grandioso effect of the oration is more than enough to get the point across. This is an oration of praise, confidence, and grand hopes. It is also the transition to a darker moment. While not the best 'Triste Espana' I've heard, it is remarkably intimate.
This disk is a regular on my daily commute. Vive Hesperion XX/XXI !

Nicely done, December 8, 2008
This review is from: Romances & Villancicos: Salamanca 1496 (Audio CD)
Some of the pieces are very nicely/beautifully done/executed by Mr. Savall and company. The featured vocalist/vocal scoring is done in a characteristic Mezzo Soprano, descante/counterpoint style.
The instrumental work of the these Spanish Renaissance compositions is also spirited and wonderful.
