Review

The memories my friend Charles Kuralt once gave us / Are echoed today by Gerry Hempel Davis / Who also loves driving our country’s back roads / Where America’s romance and beauty explodes. / With the power to touch, to inspire and move. / Somehow I know my friend Charles would approve.
(Charles Osgood)

When I was a kid, Dinah Shore sang, ‘See the USA in your Chevrolet / America is asking you to call / Drive your Chevrolet through the USA / America’s the Greatest land of all.’ In this book, Gerry Davis heard Dinah’s call, and she sees the USA.

Ms. Davis' zippy prose propels the reader along a journey of adventure and serendipity. What scenic resort, zany shop, or atmospheric restaurant will turn up along the routes from the East Coast to the Mississippi? The driving diva personalizes the trip with side comments bound to amuse. Have a good trip!

I was excited to receive this book from LibraryThing's Early Reviewer program, because I love to travel, and I love to read about other people's travels.

This book is an encyclopedia of sorts. It is a state by state guide to both popular and "out of the way" spots - places you might want to check out as you drive through the state. (This volume covers the states east of the Mississippi.)

Davis has some clever suggestions, and it would be worth your while to read this before a road trip to a particular state. It is also nice to read about the states you have already visited, and see if your favorite spots are featured. Much of the book was written from Davis' personal experience, so there are many short personal observations and stories included.

My only disappointment was that I found it difficult to read this from cover to cover. It is a book to dip into from time to time instead, and that was not what I was expecting. It reads like a USA travel encyclopedia that is written by a good friend.

This book is amazingly helpful if you are a true thrill seeker that likes new, fun, and eclectic spots when on the road, train or plane! I considered this my roadside bible while on the east side of the Mississippi. I love how Gerry Hempel Davis divides the country and her books with the use of the Mississippi! This makes it easy, resourcful and handy! I cannot wait for the second book to come out! I wonder which places will be listed in certain states I adore! Some places I had been to but others were completely new to me and did not even know they existed until the Driving Diva pointed them out in her latest book. I would highly recommend and suggest for anyone hitting the road and looking for an adventure! A great source just in case you have some time in between miles. Remember to stop and smell the roses! Pick up a copy and the next one due on shelves/Amazon soon! I know I will! Cheers!

If you're thinking of a car trip any time soon, this is definitely a book to bring along. Gerry Hempel Davis obviously spent years researching the most comfortable B and Bs, motels and hotels across the country (beds are important!). She compares muffins for deliciousness and finds wonderful restaurants. Ms. Davis talks about old hotels and gives you a sense of the history of the towns visited. And unique among travel writers, she lists a slew of interesting consignment shops. "Romancing the Roads" is a wealth of information: fun stuff that we all love to know. You'll want to just sit and read it -- like a story -- with a cup of tea. By the end, you'll feel as if you've been chatting with a friend.
