Book Description

Illustrated Histories May 2002
As a state, Romania has only been in existence since 1859, but the history of its people stretches to the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age, to the Geto-Dacians and Romans. This concise history tells the fascinating story of the evolution of the Romanian people, the creation of the Romanian Principalities, their struggle against empire-building powers, and their eventual unification to form the state of Romania.

More About the Author

About the Author

The American author, Nicolae (Nick) Klepper, was born in Bucharest, Romania. At the age of 12, he and his parents moved to America, where they settled in New York City.
After obtaining Engineering and Business degrees at the University of Denver, Nicolae decided to devote his career to international business. As a corporate executive, he worked and lived for many years in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
His lifelong interest in cookery and the desire to make his native country better known to the world led to his first book, Taste of Romania: Its Cookery and Glimpses of Its History, Folklore, Art, Literature and Poetry. It was published by Hippocrene Books, New York, in 1997 in a hard cover format. A second edition was published in 1999, and a fourth printing of the expanded edition came out in 2008. The book has now been released in paperback.
Romania: an Illustrated History, his second book, was published by Hippocrene Books in 2002, and is in its third printing. It is also being published in China.
Mr. Klepper's many years of international corporate experience has helped inform his newly published work, a gripping psychological suspense novel titled The Geneva Affair.

Nicolae resides in Edinburgh, Scotland with his Scottish wife, Ann. He has three sons, one daughter, and four grandchildren, living in different parts of the world.
He is a member of the Society of Authors and the Edinburgh Writers Club.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for the Romanian-bound traveller, July 2, 2008
By
Angus Konstam (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Romania: An Illustrated History (Illustrated Histories) (Paperback)
This book is an excellent survey of Romanian history, from the prehistoric period to the aftermath of the Communist era. It was the best history book on the subject I've read, and although it doesn't really warrant the term "fully" illustrated, it contains over 100 images, many of which I've never seen published before. Actually, Nicolae Klepper does a lot more than write a national history, as the book is grounded throughout in Romanian art, architecture, music, culture, gastronomy and custom. The author has mixed all this together to produce an extremely readable history book, a must for anyone planning to visit the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars great history book, January 26, 2010

Nicolae Klepper's "Romania: An Illustrated History" is a great history book for anyone interested in the country.
It's well-written, entertaining, engaging and filled with anecdotes and stories that have historical credibility.
This history book is also a page-turner. Readers will learn a lot about Romania, a country about which very little is known
in the West, outside of its Dracula mythology which is so popular nowadays.

My grandparents were immigrants from Iasi, Romania and I read this book in an attempt to learn more about my cultural background. I was not disappointed! This book provides a full history (although the changes politically occur so frequently they become difficult to follow) with focus on the key figures in politics, as well as in literature. The stories of different regions of Romania - Moldavia, Transylvania, Wallachia etc. - are covered. This book is a very readable and very comprehensive introduction to Romanian history.
