This is a wonderful introduction to the music of one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century. After great initial success in France, England and to a lesser degree in America, Enescu's beautiful music has been unfortunately more or less neglected until now. The present recording, the fruit of Foster Lawrence's great affection for Enescu's music, goes a long way in rectifying this injustice.

If this music arises your interest in Enescu's genius (and I see no reason why not!), I would like to recommend some other more complex (but nevertheless still stunning) compositions of his, such as Symphonies nos. 2 & 3 and his greatest masterpiece, the opera "Oedipe". Some of these are available with the same brilliant Lawrence Foster and his Monte - Carlo Philharmonic. An unrivalled combination on this road of discovery!

Lawrence Foster has recorded all of Enesco's major works, including the opera OEDIPE, the three symphonies, and here the infinitively provocative orchestral oddments including and beyond the First Rhapsody. Foster manages its quirky rhythms rather well (but is no match for Fiedler in this regard, and the excitement level is markedly lower). The Monte Carlo band were having an off day and sound dispirited, not an auspicious beginning for this set.

Matters improve, however, with the neglected Second Rhapsody, which is presented with all its heroism and nobility intact, a memorable performance. Immediately following is the set's choice rarity, Enesco's Op. 1 the POEME ROUMAIN (1897), actually a long-form symphonic suite and ablaze with colour and rhythms Foster clearly relishes. Too it introduces themes and motifs later developed in the First Rhapsody.

The three Orchestral Suites are a very mixed bag, spanning the years 1903-38. This is all tonal but twentieth-century music, alternatively progressive yet also highly Romantic. The first suite is extremely diffuse and meandering but will reward the patient listener. The second is more tightly focused, more rhythmic and more reminiscent of the dancelike Rhapsodies. The third, inscribed "Villageoise," is precisely that--rustic, melodic and consistently surprising in its waywardness. Of the set's filler, the Symphonie Concertante, the less said the better. It is very beautiful, very derivative (of Lalo among others) and seems to go on forever.

Those with even the mildest curiosity about Enesco will be rewarded by this set. Foster is consistently dutiful without being inspiring, let down only by the subpar orchestra and low-level recording, easily cured by cranking up the volume.

The wordless male chorus sound like a bunch of amateurs, and the orchestra plays dull, listless, and occasionally out of tune. Both Romanian Rhapsodies, certainly Enescu's most popular, have been done better by far. I was seriously disappointed in all the works showcased on this CD. There is a lot of beauty inherent in these works that needs to be brought out. This is not a recording that does it.
