About the Author

Robert Haldane, a descendant of Scottish nobility, was born in London in 1764 and educated at Dundee and Edinburgh. After serving in the naval war against France (1780-1783) he returned to Edinburgh University and in 1786 settled down to a country life on his ancestral estate at Airthrey.

[Romans] was his only commentary, though he wrote other valuable works such as Evidences and Authority of Divine Revelation and The Authenticity and Inspiration of the Scriptures.

Although the writings of Robert Haldane are few, his exposition on Paul's Epistle to the Romans is a masterpiece and a lifetime accomplishment that is well worth adding to the library of any serious bible student. His ability to correlate Paul's declaration of God's Grace and the necessity of holiness in the Christian's life are well balanced and beautifully stated. After thoroughly commenting on the Epistle, Haldane included an epilogue dealing with the Christian sabbath and its perfect fulfillments of the types in the Old Testament Levitical laws. This writing is a must for any person who wishes to dig into the treasures of the Roman Epistle.

This is a very good commentary, written in the Puritan tradition. When I read Martyn Lloyd-Jones' exposition of Romans, he often quoted from Haldane. Lloyd-Jones regarded Haldane's and Charles Hodge's commentary on Romans as the two best on the book. This book has the best of Calvinistic theology, with a strong defense of the total depravity of man and the sufficiency of Christ alone to save. The only drawback of the comm. is that it sometimes spends a lot of time dealing with other commentators of the 19th century such as MacKnight and Moses Stuart, but that is a very, minor issue. Otherwise, this is a solid commentary.

I'm only in chapter 4 but so far this is a great commentary. Brings in slot of different scriptures and he can get lengthy on important issues. I recommend this along with Charles hodge, John Murray, John calvin, and Luther's lectures on romans.

This might be the best ever commentary on Romans. Reverential, thorough, and thought-provoking. I'm reading it through a verse at a time like one would a daily devotional.
