5.0 out of 5 stars The absolute standard on the Book of Romans, March 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Romans Verse-By-Verse: A Classic Devotional Commentary (Paperback)
Newell's Romans Verse by Verse is the absolute standard and an absolute MUST READ for every Christian. There is no New Testament Book more important than Romans regarding the believer's salvation and justification by faith as well as God's future dealings with national Israel. Newell not only exhibits a most accurate exegetical presentation of the text but also a devotional study that will put the reader on his knees praising God for His wonderous work of GRACE toward all who believe in Jesus Christ.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Benchmark for all exegetical commentaries on Romans, October 7, 1998
This review is from: Romans Verse-By-Verse: A Classic Devotional Commentary (Paperback)
William R. Newell, the Spirit-blessed author of the precious hymn "At Calvary" containing more doctrine in it's 4 verses than most sermons in today's pulpits, brings a sound, Dispensational verse-by-verse study of Paul's Epistle to the Romans. Truly a must-read and study for any serious Bible student, teacher or preacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Opened my eyes to Grace, May 19, 2003
This review is from: Romans Verse-By-Verse: A Classic Devotional Commentary (Paperback)
I used to believe that Romans was the most difficult book of the Bible to read. That is because I did not understand what it meant to "live by grace." It took almost a year to finish the commentary (read in parallel with a Bible study group), but I now have a profoundly different concept of God's grace and how we as Christians experience it. I would urge every Christian to study Romans intensely, and I would suggest this commentary to help you. The commentary itself is exhaustive, making reference to the Greek for fine or disputative points.

Two important points:
Newell uses his own translation, using King James English. You might want to have your own Bible to compare the text with if you get lost in the "ye"s, "thee"s and "thou"s. (Also, Newell contends that the KJV mistranslates some points; his explanation from the Greek is satisfactory to me, but you might want to compare with a KJV and an NIV/NASB.)

Also, Newell comes from a dispensational perspective. If I had known this at the beginning of his book, I would have understood some of his comments better.
