Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This gently humorous first novel is told from the point of view of Annie, a refreshingly self-assured 17-year-old. When her family moves from Utrecht, Holland to Salt Lake City, Utah, Annie adjusts easily to her new life. She and her sister Henny, 16, each acquire a best friend and, not long after, adoring boyfriends. However, despite their steady beaus, each sister has a big crush on gorgeous Tom Woolley. But while Henny flaunts her infatuation shamelessly, Annie keeps her feelings secret. When Henny plays an elaborate prank on Wooley, Annie takes part willingly, though feigning disinterest. The prank backfires, and Annie's true feelings are revealed for all to see. This event, in combination with the death of Annie's difficult, senile grandmother, forces her to come to terms with a new, more honest vision of herself. Annie's difficulties will arouse the reader's sympathy, but it is her lighthearted descriptions of the daily pleasures of her new life that make this well-paced novel so much fun to read. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 8-10 Annie Sehlmeier, along with her parents, sister, and grandmother, immigrates from Holland to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they join an uncle and an aunt. Annie is the restrained, considerate, intelligent daughter, her younger sister Henny the vociferous, outgoing one. But all of this changes when Annie first sees handsome, charming Tom Wooley, every high-school girl's dream date. The story is really Annie's and is not unique to her immigrant status. Her acceptance of American teen mores is told to readers by the author rather than experienced by Annie. Annie's interactions with her other relatives, her grandmother's senility, and her aunt's obesity are more ways of setting the stage for Annie's obsession with Tom and its aftermath than explorations of interpersonal relationships. It is the obsession that is the focal point of the novel, and this aspect of the book is its best feature. In fact, romantic obsessions have not been as well covered in other young adult novels as in this first novel. Therese Bigelow, Hampton Public Library, Va.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, February 19, 2000

This review is from: The Romantic Obsessions and Humiliations of Annie Sehlmeier (Mass Market Paperback)
Annie is a girl who must deal with a lot of changes in her life-- a new country, a new school, new friends, a new language. She is also dealing with those turbulent teenage emotions and how to reveal or conceal them. Annie is so real as a character, and Louise Plummer writes with such a great sense of humor that this book is a delight to read. As a Utahn, it was also fun to read a book with a setting that is familiar. This book made me laugh and cry, and teaches that of all the people in the world, the one you should be is yourself.
