4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I love chick lit, but unfortunately there is a lot of garbage out there.

This book, however, is not the case. From the original title, right down to the storyline, everything about this book is great.

Our main character, a lawyer who is still trying to forgot about "scumbag" is throwing herself back into the dating pool.

This book...

2.0 out of 5 stars Predictable to the very end
While I found this book enjoyable, it was fairly predictable. I know a lot of books are, but when I can predict almost the entire book AND be 100% right, well what's the point. I only finished the book to see how things would turn out with the guy it was VERY obvious she would end up with. All that being said, it was still a funny take on dating. Though if I was the...

I love chick lit, but unfortunately there is a lot of garbage out there.

This book, however, is not the case. From the original title, right down to the storyline, everything about this book is great.

Our main character, a lawyer who is still trying to forgot about "scumbag" is throwing herself back into the dating pool.

This book basically describes all of her wonderful and oh not so wonderful experiences.

While some of the coincidences are a little much (she happens to keep bumping into the same bartender and the same doctor -yeah right!) but still, the writing is fun and breezy and I really liked all of the characters - right down to the requisite pesky parents.

Very funny, uplifting chick lit.

BUY IT.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who knew finding Mr. Right could be such a challenge..., October 12, 2006
By
This review is from: Romantically Challenged (Paperback)
Perennial single 30-something lawyer Julie has not had a decent relationship since her fiance ran off with a starlet. Constantly harassed by her family and well meaning friends to get back into the dating pool and get married to a nice Jewish boy already, she determines that finding Mr. Right is just a numbers game, and if she goes on enough dates, she will find her future husband. It's all in the math. Let the dating games begin...

Blind dates set up by well meaning friends, impromptu dates with casual acquaintances, and even a dating service result in some pretty hysterical dating disasters that even result in her becoming tabloid fodder. From cheapskates to mommy's boys... from wanna-be actors to closeted gays - she manages to date them all. Despite Julie being funny, she is definitely her own worst enemy, and doesn't realize that sometimes the person you least expect might be your perfect match after all.

Orsoff's hilarious riff on dating in the new millennium is funny from cover to cover, particularly protagonist Julie's inner thoughts. A great read that would have been first rate with a meatier ending!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book that just ended..., May 4, 2006
This review is from: Romantically Challenged (Paperback)
The book cover and its title are what drew me to this book. I started reading it at Border's and ended up checking it out at the library. It was a good book that told about a 30-something woman and her trials with dating. I couldn't put it down and was surprised when I turned the page to continue reading and it just ended. That's it? I didn't expect it to end the way it did. I hope the author will follow-up with a sequel.

I only finished the book to see how things would turn out with the guy it was VERY obvious she would end up with. All that being said, it was still a funny take on dating. Though if I was the character's friend, I would have had a hard time being diplomatic. She was kind of annoying.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dating is a cruel thing., April 5, 2006

This review is from: Romantically Challenged (Paperback)
I really enjoyed the whole story line about a 32 year old single women in the dating world trying to find love. That I could easily identify and relate to. The actual personality of the main character Julie Burns, just got on my nerves. I think she was way to picky and didn't give some of the guys she wa sdating a chance. Sure, things like being too short and having HUGE nose hairs would be a turn off. Things like yelling at a waitress, may have been a one time deal. Maybe the guy had a bad day? I would have given him one more shot.

Anyways, it was a good book, but like I said, I didn't like the main character as much as I could have.

First off, I want to say that I did enjoy reading this book despite what I am going to say. First off, I thought that the book was really predictable. Second, I kind of admire the main character for not just settling...in real life I see too many people marrying the wrong people just because they are tired of being alone and it is convenient. At the same time, the main character is the most annoying, snobby, conceited, clueless person. I really couldn't stand her. I kept secretly hoping for things to turn out badly for her...I think I'm much too nice though because I was happy with how it ended even though I had a feeling that it would end that way.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Typical, April 8, 2008

Is it just me or do all books based on "looking for Mr. Right" talk about a successful woman lawyer who struggles with going on many dates but finally finds the right guy?
This book was cute and for the price, I didn't mind reading it. However, I found myself being about to guess what was coming next and not a real "page-turner".
Overall, a cute book with the typical happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chick-Lit that will make you laugh!!!, February 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Chick-Lit is not my usual genre to read, but I absolutely love Beth Orsoff's writing so I wanted to read the first book that she wrote. This was a light, feel good, fun read. Many times I found myself laughing out loud and other times groaning in agreement. The trials and tribulations of Julie as she jumps into the dating pool are hilarious, and for me, a couple of times it hit pretty close to home! If you want a great weekend read, this is the book! Beth has added an epilogue on her author page for an alternate ending of Romantically Challenged. I thought the ending without the epilogue was wonderful, but her epilogue was perfect! Great job!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Fairy Tale!, January 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Yay...... A fairy tale that faces reality! I would highly recommend this book for single girls feeling the pressure to find their husband. For some, love is testing us & just making us patiently wait, so that when we find the love of our life, we appreciate him more than ever imagined. I personally have stolen the title "romantically challenged" to describe myself! What a fabulous term! Thank you Beth for giving single girls that instant burst of hope again. When one feels that something is wrong, this book reels us back to reality...we just haven't found the one & it's ok!
Beth Orsoff's writing flows so easily for readers, that it is difficult to put down the book. This novel includes humor, real life situations, and feelings we all can relate to on one level or another. The thoughts of Julie (main character) are so true to life and honest that they make you laugh out loud and feel like sharing her tears. It is a quick and easy read, and absolutely worth reading. Personally, I would read it all over again. I'm not one to re-read books, but this might be one that I will read again.

I was looking for a fluffy, fun, unchallenging book to read and somehow came across a link to Romantically Challenged, on sale for $2.99, and I went for it. I have to say, it was just what I was looking for. It was definitely an amusing way for me to pass some otherwise empty time on a hot summer afternoon. A nice surprise is the author's short epilogue, available online. I had some trouble finding it so I emailed the author, and she sent me a copy of it via email within an hour or so. I surprised myself, enjoying this book so much. Typically I'm more interested in books that involve forensic science, microbiology, infectious disease, or vampires, but honestly I will be keeping an eye out for more of this author's work, especially at the low price point like this. If you enjoy this type of chick lit as a matter of course, I'd definitely check it out!
