Biography of Romare Bearden

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up?Brown provides the chronological history of a talented painter, lucidly integrating a moving picture of blacks in America in the 20th century into the compelling narrative. He takes readers from his subject's birth in North Carolina in 1911 to his involvement with art while a mathematics major at Boston University. Then, in Harlem in the 1930s, Bearden came to know the modern art scene and tried to merge its aesthetic concepts with qualities from African American life. A few black-and-white photographs of Bearden and his family are included. Other black-and-white and full-color reproductions give readers a good sense of the power of his inventive use of collage, which has been called "visual jazz," to depict a complex culture. But his vision was very broad and his appetite for all art enormous: "He believed that there is 'only one art, and it belongs to all mankind.'" A book that helps readers understand the universal aspects of his work.?Kenneth Marantz, Art Education Department, Ohio State University, Columbus
