The replacements arrived today, and live up to the excellent reviews. They slide open easily, and will be perfect for campfire use.
I'm not sure what the problem was, perhaps a quality control issue with the factory that produces them. However, 5 stars for a company that stands behind their product and provides outstanding customer service. Thanks, Michael!
Great concept, but they need to be twice as thick and much heavier duty to deserve the reviews posted here.
Update: Contacted the company and they replaced them. They're just as flimsy, but I do appreciate the manufacturer's excellent service with the replacement and this time we'll treat them like eggshells as not to ruin another set.
