4.0 out of 5 stars great book for historians of ancient rome, August 19, 2009
By
This review is from: Rome of the Caesars (Paperback)
This book is NOT travel guide, but rather a book to introduce those interested in history to the world of Rome in ancient times. This book is excellent because it gives the reader more than just the overview basics one would expect to find in a travel guide, yet despite its detail it doesn't bog the reader down. It is very well organized, providing background on the founding of Rome, and the development of Rome over the centuries as she struggled from hill village to world power, to her inevitable fall at the hands of the uncivilized, as well as technical information on major historical sites, even including Ostia--- Rome's ancient port. The book is generous with photographs of the sites, so you will be able to readily recognize each when you see them in person.
For anyone who desires more than just a cursory overview of ancient Rome, but wants to avoid overly technical treatises, this is a wonderful starting point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get To Know Ancient Rome!, August 4, 2009
By
This review is from: Rome of the Caesars (Paperback)
I loved it! I am a Roman history buff and want to know everything I can about this civilization. I collect ancient Roman coins, read this stuff for fun, and watch every show on ancient Rome I can find (yes, even the really boring ones). This is a wonderful way for beginners to get a feel for what the city looked like during the reign of the emperors. It is detailed enough, and has a good amount of pictures for the reader to understand the layout of the city without being too complicated. I recommend it...
