From Library Journal
The 1,408 entries here are organized under 11 comprehensive headings. A preface explains the idiosyncratic nature of the informative annotations and warns that this survey covers 20th-century literature through 1988 only in English (an appendix adds final entries from 1989); but inevitably references to European studies will be found in the works included. The brief but perceptive overview of the period (23 pages long) emphasizes recent, appreciative historical attitudes toward the fourth century, which previously has too often been almost unanimously condemned as little more than the dismal source for later disasters. A valuable bibliography for the scholar.
