A true classic PC game,

This review is from: Rome Total War Anthology (Total War, Alexander & Barbarian) (Video Game)
While I haven't had much time to mess around with the Alexander expansion, I have to say that there are few, if any, video games that have sucked me in as much as Rome Total War and the Barbarian Invasion expansion. While I obviously love Medieval 2 Total War as much as the next guy (when I get to borrow my ex's super laptop anyway :), there's something amazing -- especially for a history buff -- about the diversity, challenge, and overall feel of the RTW games, never mind the various mods available which pretty much keep it from becoming obsolete.
Generally, I am the type of gamer who avoids flavor of the month games, but who REALLY gets into 2-3 great games a year (typically console games, e.g. I'm way too into Fallout 3 right now, as I was codependent with Assassin's Creed a year ago), and I kind of laughed at my good friend who recommended this game to me a few years ago (yes, yes...I know: I'm totally with it...). It just seemed like too much time and trouble. After borrowing it from him in August of 2006, I think he finally got it back in late 2007, right after I bought my own copy. :) I've played various custom battles and campaigns with various factions with all kinds of difficulties and I NEVER get sick of it. I'm a fledgling writer who studies ancient, medieval, and modern history (both eastern and western), along with general military history and theory, pretty seriously, so conquering the world with Parthia or Rome never gets old--EVER! The sheer quality of the Total War games, let alone the constant barrage of and variety of mods, make them worth every penny. I HATED RTS games prior to experiencing this series: now I LOVE 'EM. I can't think of a better compliment than that.

My son enjoys this game very much. He spends hours playing it. the game is not just a fun tool for him but it is also teaching him history. He is always asking questions and trying to find answers.

This game is fantastic - it has most of the elements I crave in strategy games.
But first and foremost - it sucks you in for "just one more turn" and has great re playability. The game has great details in its societies and their units - it is really fun figuring out how to best defeat the different types of armies that attack / fight against you. Defeating a Macedonian army is going to require different units than fighting the Egyptians. It is great strategy. I have only played two go through of just the first disk (Rome Total War) - I have spent over sixty hours trying to win - and I am still hooked! I can't wait to try the other disks! One of the other great things about this game - you can make lots of individual mistakes - but if your overall strategy is good you can still win - but it will take quite a bit more effort.

Works on Windows7, is very stable. Longest time I have had this game up is 18 hrs. No bugs or Game crash unless the optional settings are pushed, such as highest quality Video options with the Huge units option . This tends to increase instability. I am currently using a Toshiba Satellite L775 64 bit system, 6 GB ram, 500 GB Hard Drive. My screen size is 17.3 inches and the wide screen option on this game doesn't fill the entire screen. Over all this classic game is still very playable. The seller was prompt, and packaged the shipment very well.

This is perhaps the best game of the Total War series. I bought the original Rome: Total War when it came out and I was quite pleased. The later ones might have shinier graphics, but IMHO this one has better gameplay balance. However, I never bought either of the expansions for this game.
After losing disk 3 of my original game, I decided to spring and buy the full pack. I was not disappointed. I also strongly recommend that you check out some of the mods for this game. In particular, check out Europa Barbarorum - an incredibly detailed historical realism mod.

this is the best RTS/TBS game I know that has come out of Europe. This game has stuck with me not only because the gameplay is absolutely stunning, the graphics are well done, or because it runs smoothly, but rather it has a whole bunch of mods and battle editors that, while not being supported by the The Creative Assembly, is what makes this game collection worth it. Most people didn't buy Alexander Total War by itself because it sucked, but if you buy it with the anthology, your saving money and then you can get Lord of the Rings Total war put on it, which is a free mod that is totally awesome.
Game rocks, and has good support

When I purchased R.T.W.Anthology I did not realize that the strategy would be as challenging as it is. It test's your thinking. When your nearly 70 years old as I am it's very good for the mind.
During the first couple tries at RTW I kept going into a "black out" and could not win that 1st. game. Had to get help working out bugs in my system. The music is very well done and would like to know who does the compositions. So far the history is very accurate and would be good learning tool for all ages. the designers of the graphics are to be commended, although that of Alexander and Barbarian fall short. The RTW map is much better. After all that the only thing I would like is a written manual for studying the content of the games. Lastly, I would like to be able to open the other factions like Spain and the other in RTW. Over all this is an supper game. P.S. A question: why is RTW a DVD while Alexander and Barbarian are CD-ROM?
