5.0 out of 5 stars Great job bringing a great strategy game to the Mac
Rome: Total War has been my favorite strategy game for the past few years. I've had to stay in the Windows world, though, since there wasn't a native Mac version.

I've been kicking the tires of Feral's Mac port for the past couple of days using the Rome: Total Realism - Platinum mod (which Feral has also enabled for the Mac, along with a couple of the other...

I originally played this game for the PC and was excited when it finally came out for mac. My impression has been mixed.

Rome: Total War

This is the better of the two games. I first started playing as Brutii and so far so good. I have had no problems. However, when I tried the game as Gaul, problems started to arise. I was besieged early on by a Roman army, but when I tried to attack with the army in the settlement, the game just froze. On one settlement, there were added buildings to one of the religious buildings (5 tiers of upgrades instead of the usual 3).

Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion

This is the game I have had problems with. I started playing with the Franks. When I tried to capture the Saxons capital, the game crashed. I tried several ways (play the battle out, auto-resolve, etc.) but the game crashed each time. The same thing happened when I played as the Saxons trying to take London from the Romano-British.

Overall, the game has been fun to play. Other than the above mentioned problems, the game play has been very smooth. I am hoping a future update will fix some of these problems. I have sent an email to Ferral Support, and am still waiting to hear back. Until then, I will give the game 3 stars for the conversion problems.

Rome: Total War has been my favorite strategy game for the past few years. I've had to stay in the Windows world, though, since there wasn't a native Mac version.

I've been kicking the tires of Feral's Mac port for the past couple of days using the Rome: Total Realism - Platinum mod (which Feral has also enabled for the Mac, along with a couple of the other most popular mods). No problems so far; the game has been flawless, with no crashes or observed bugs. Thumbs up to Feral not only for bringing the vanilla game over to the Mac world, but for enabling the more historically accurate variants too -- it really makes the game much more enjoyable. You can read detailed instructions on how to enable the mods on Feral's forum on Facebook ([...]).

The only negative comment I can make at this point is that it puts a heavy load on my system (2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro). The Activity Monitor maxes out while I'm running the game, even in campaign mode (which I thought should tax the system less than the battle mode). The keyboard gets uncomfortably hot and the fans go at max speed. Make sure your system is up to the task!

5.0 out of 5 stars Total War is totally Awesome, March 11, 2010

The Total War series has been regarded as one of the finest strategy franchises for the PC, scoring a remarkable 9.4 out of 10 by [...].

It is a remarkable game that allows the player to begin their quest for glory and power in ancient Rome, and then being able to move on to more than two dozen other fractions set in the ancient world. It is a well rounded game allowing players to micro-manage each town, city, and battle, or you can delegate the computer to help you out. There are no lags, loading time is faster than it is on its PC counterpart, and battles are as fast as ever. Unfortunately, there have been no upgrades to to the graphics, but game-play is so enjoyable it will only bother the hardcore gamers.

It's a highly enjoyable game which leaves us hoping Creative Assembly will bring Medieval 2 and Empire Total War to the Mac platform.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a good buy, May 27, 2011

Cinematics and gameplay is so pixelated that it is borderline unplayable. Not to mention the fact that the cursor keeps disappearing at random moments and frantic fishing around with the mouse doesn't always restore it. Really surprised that the developer published this at all, it seems a shame that so much work went into a poorly published product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to bad reviews!!!, January 25, 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Rome: Total War Gold Edition (DVD-ROM)
For starters this is one most amazing games ever made. You hear some people saying in the reviews that it's "poorly made" it's not! It is very well done, and the conversion is very smooth.
The gameplay is fantastic! The Historical realism is like none other. I used to hate history, and ever since I've played this game I can't get enough of it. It makes history come alive. So if you love history or you want to know more on ancient times, get this game! You will not regret it.

If you like Medieval times or 1700 classic warfare style pick up the other total wars. Because history comes alive in these games.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy, December 29, 2011

Well I bought the game for the Mac OS X and downloaded it. The fact that it took 4 days to download was outrageous. Then once the download was complete the Disk Image wouldnt open. So then I re-downloaded the whole game and then I was told that the game wouldnt open due to an Illegal Seek. So I would not recommend buying this game in a download operation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good game, very fun, December 27, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Rome: Total War Gold Edition (DVD-ROM)
This is a good game, but there are a few parts that aren't as fun. If you want to play as a roman family in the original it is pretty fun. If you play as carthage or greece, you get attacked by rome almost immediately. This can be annoying. I do not find the barbarian expansion pack very fun either. This is a game where it takes a while to master every aspect, but it doesn't take long to learn how to play. I think the battles are pretty fun, and take a good amount of time. A battle can be 10 or so minutes, but you can do an automatic battle. I recomend this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff, October 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Rome Total War Gold Edition worked very well on my mac, especially the Barbarian Invasion. In the original Rome Total War, I experience just one little bug that if it's gone, the game is perfect. When you end turn in the campaign, sometimes it will just get stuck in the middle of another faction, but I figure out how to continue playing the campaign. Simply quit the game and just open it again and load the autosave. This game is a basic version of real life C&C and a much more complicated version of other C&C games such as Starcraft and Warcraft.

I wonder what everyones favorite faction is...
In Rome Total War, I like the Seleucids and Parthians. In Barbarian Invasion, I like the Sassanids and the Eastern Romans. (See the common? They are all in the east due to the fact that trade and income there is higher than the west)
