Review

I am so excited to use it. I have been teaching Romeo and Juliet for six years (almost 36 classes) and this guide has given me fresh material that is spot on with the standards I must teach. I can't wait to see what creative responses my kids come up with. You have removed so much extra work from my busy schedule! And I LOVE how your guides don't overlap information so I really get my money's worth. --Skittl4702 via TeachersPayTeachers.com

About the Author

Kristen Bowers is a former English teacher and the founder and President of Secondary Solutions. She has written over 15 books, including Literature Guides for Of Mice and Men, Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird, Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and more, as well as two essay writing Guides: Essay Apprentice and Essay Architect. In 2005, Mrs. Bowers became frustrated and tired of writing her own worksheets, quizzes, tests, and activities to teach her students the required literature and the content standards on which her students were being tested at the district and state levels. At the time, resources and tools that were available for purchase were not up to her high standards of teaching, so she decided to create these materials herself.

Mrs. Bowers set to work to create one of the most comprehensive and innovative Literature Guide sets on the market. Joined by a middle school teacher with 21 years of secondary school experience, Secondary Solutions began, and has since matured into a specialized team of intermediate and secondary teachers who have developed a set of Literature and Writing Guides unsurpassed by all others.

I have taught Romeo and Juliet for three consecutive years now, and have tried every bit of material out there to reach my students. I can finally say I have found THE literature unit for Romeo and Juliet. I have been so pleased with the response from my students, who are actually UNDERSTANDING the play through the numerous activities this guide has. And they love it! I cannot recommend this guide enough...I will certainly buy from this company again.

This is a well organized literature guide, but my eighth graders were a little too advanced for some of the activities. There were fun and innovative activities, I would highly recommend it since it does trigger some higher order thinking skills if used cleaverly. Teachers will appreciate the well organized and easy to understand worksheets and activities. If you have an inclusion class or one in which the students (or teachers)are new to Shakespeare, I would definitely recommend this guide.

I found this guide to be helpful, but not necessarily something I would totally rely on. I used many of the worksheets and tests. This guide did save me a lot of time, as I was growing tired of writing my own quizzes and doing research in order to find and present contextual information for my students. Above all else, the guide helped me outline my unit for Romeo and Juliet--I followed the basic principals and logic of the guide, but did in the end create my own materials whenever I though the activities weren't what I wanted or were just subpar content. Also, I thought the pre reading activities weren't very thoughtful--they just seemed to be a formality, like they were just tacked on at the end. This, in general, is the problem I have with most "literature guides" or "study guides": I know the authors who write for companies like Secondary Solutions are pressured to work economically and efficiently (it's the only way you can make money as a freelance writer) so you don't always end up with quality work. However, I myself wrote for a similar company, and I would have to say the quality of Secondary Solutions is much better than that of the company I worked for (I'll give you a hint--it's the first website that comes up when you type "lesson plans" into google.) On the other hand, I find the consistency of Secondary Solutions to be less than desirable. I also purchased their literature guide for House on Mango Street and found it to not be as good as the guide for Romeo and Juliet.

Gosh - I didn't expect the author to respond to my review. Apparently there are two editions of this lit unit, and I somehow got the first edition (used, no less - don't ask how I got a used one through Amazon). I stand by my first review of the original edition (it has a maroon cover with what looks like folds of velvet fabric and is 52 pages long). It's still collecting dust on my bookcase.

HOWEVER, I discovered that there is a newer edition (it has a similar color scheme, but has flames on it and is 150 pages long). That version is vastly superior with much more usable material. I have several literture guides from Secondary Solutions, all of which I use and recommend, and I am happy to recommend the second edition of the Romeo and Juliet lit guide as well.

Original Review: Don't waste your money on this one, teachers. There's ONE activity for an entire act. That's it. *eye roll* Surfing the web results in more usable activities. The only thing I actually used was the pre-reading/sonnet material.

This book is highly resourceful for handouts and quizzes. I like to make my lessons and units unique to me, and I find that the less time I spend on re-inventing the wheel, the better. There are plenty of tests and quizzes, but more importantly there are worksheets that explore many of the unique elements of play-writing as they apply to Shakespeare's work. It's nice to see higher levels of thinking being explored through this packet.

I have both honors, regular, and remedial classes and the resources provided in this book are great for picking and choosing in order to differentiate for a wide range of student abilities. This is a worth-while investment.
