Aaliyah, Timbaland and Destiny's Child never fail!,
By Hannibal Alexander (Richmond, ca USA) - See all my reviews

C'Mon, it's Aaliyah. It's gotta be hot. If every other song on here was weak, the 4 songs Aaliyah contributes would still be worth buying the CD. The new hit "Try Again", the hit from "Next Friday Soundtrack" "I Don't Wanna" (which actually should have been a single, but I'm not bitter). Her collabo with DMX "Come Back In One Piece" is major hot. Her last song "Are you Feelin Me" is alright, but still much better than most of the tired R&B that is out today. But You know what the rest of the songs are also hot. Destiny's Child's "The Perfect Man" is really really really good. Even though it's obvious that Destiny's Child is just Beyonce, it's all good cuz they keep on putting out hot music (for anybody who doesn't have it yet, buy "The Writing's ON The Wall", I can't stress that enough). "The Perfect Man" is hot. Also Joe surprised me with "Rose in a Concrete Road" cuz I don't normally like Joe. BG I like, his song is cool. Ginuwine's song is hot. Timbaland and Magoo's is hot. You know what I don't have anything bad to say about this CD. I just can't wait till Aaliyah's 3rd album comes out.

Smooth, hot, ready to jam.,

The CD has a few extraneous tracks that could be clipped, but otherwise it is a tight disc that proves to be among best hip-hop soundtracks in recent memory. The Aaliyah offerings absolutely highlight all the young singer has to offer, and she is really allowed to shine here. [Note: Chris Astoyan, whose review is found below, says to buy the "Try Again" single in place of the album--but that is listed as a soundtrack cut in BILLBOARD Mag, meaning it's not a commercially available single]. Joe ("Rose in a Concrete World") and Destiny's Child ("Perfect Man") offer typical fare, which is always palatable. And the DMX/Aaliyah joint project "Come Back in One Piece" and Dave Bing/Lil' Mo's "Somebody Gonna Die Tonight" offer the requisite, irresistible rap nuggets for which these soundtracks are known. However, in my opinion, it is the infectious, radio-friendly "This Is a Test" by the underappreciated Chante Moore that steals the show. This one is a must-have for hip-hop fans.

It's amazing how well the music blends in with the movie, complenting it beautifully. The best songs are the Aaliyah ones, like Try Again and Are You feelin' Me, It Really Don't Matter from Confidential, Dave Bing and Lil Mo on Somebody Gonna Die Tonight, This is a Test from Chante Moore, Come On from Blade and the Aaliyah and DMX collabroation Come Back in One Piece. Which brings me to my next point. Whoever has seen the movie knows that there's another DMX song, at the start, called I'm Gonna Crawl. The song is absolutely AWESOME. But, it's not on the soundtrack. I don't know why either, because it's actually one of the most memorable songs from the film, and better than most of the songs on here. Too bad, cuz many ppl will buy this based on that track, and'll be very disappointed when they don't see it. It's not even on any of X's albums, either. Oh well. It's still a great soundtrack, and you have to see the movie before you listen to it. The only thing besides the missing DMX song that I wish this thing had was little snippets from the movie, like The Rush Hour Soundtrack. Even so, you should pick this one up. It'll be better than most Hip-hop releases this year.

It's been a long time, Tim shouldna left U, w/o some dope beatz 2 step 2! If you've heard Aaliyah's newest single, "Try Again", you definitely know whut I'm talking about. After listening 2 this album thoroughly, I heard new talent from some hot new Blackground artists and I also heard tha audio masterpieces of an old friend.. tha man they call Timbaland. Once again, Tim has done it with 2 outstanding Aaliyah trax, a smooth, laid-back Ginuwine track, and he reunites with long-time potna-in-rhyme, Magoo. Although I expected a little more Timbo and his awesome production on tha LP, there were cutz that make U wanna cop this album. From Confidential's "It Really Don't Matter" to BG's "Rollin' Raw", this album has a variety of hiphop and R&B artists. Although some cuts are a bit sluggish (esp. Mack 10's "Thugz"), this album iz solid and a good soundtrack period. Plus, any album that's been blessed by tha soundz of Timbaland iz a good one. Well, that's my opinion, but you know & I know that Tim will make you bounce.

When you look at the back of the c.d cover and see the listing of tracks it reads like a who's who hot right now with artists like Aaliyah, Joe, B.G, Timbaland, Ginuwine, Chante Moore, Destiny's Child you would say wow this has to be one hot c.d .. Well it is for the most part.. This is one of the hottest ever assembled the best of Rnb and hip-hop right now and through in some new acts in the mix.. The R &B tracks are clearly the best here in this c.d while the hip-hop tracks dont go over as well Of the best 4 songs From Aaliyah First single Try Again, The Very funky collaboration with Dmx Come Back In One Piece , and I Dont Wanna are here best tracks.. Other hot Rnb Joints on the album Rose In A Concrete World-JOE, Simply Irresistible-Ginuwine, Perfect Man- Destiny's Child , Woozy- Playa.. The hip-hop tracks dont fare as well but there are a couple you should check out Rollin Raw- B.G. and Newcomer Blade with her cut Come on.. Overall pretty good C.D. that should get some play for a while.. There is a slight disappointment that c.d didnt include The song by Dmx that is played during the open credits of the movie

Aaliyah, Aaliyah, Aaliyah, Aaliyah her chemistry is off da CHAIN! If you haven't listened to this soundtrack or haven't seen the movie you've made a BIG mistake. Both the movie and soundtrack are off da chain.Aaliyah has 4 good songs on the soundtrack and one featuring the lovely DMX (Come Back In One Piece..).They already made the video and the song is on the radio everywhere. So, take my advice and get the soundtrack and go see the movie.

The CD is inconsistent, with some wack material, and some tight songs. The album shines more on the R&B tip, and starts strong with Aaliyah's "Try Again". OK, so you heard that one, but the DMX/Aaliyah duo is bangin too! THEN, Joe comes with it with "Rose in a Concrete World", and this song is tight! What I really like about it is the rock guitar - when was the last time you an electric guitar on an R&B track? Not since Chuckii Booker! (Anyone remember him? Respond if you do! )My personal favorite is Aaliyah's "Are you Feeling Me?" B-cuz it hits hard, and there's a Michael Jackson/Missy Elliot "Hot Boys" vibe to it. It just needs to be longer and remixed, but the song is FIERCE. Big up to Timbaland, cuz I know this was his "battle" track. Ginuwine flips it with "Simply Irresistable", and the song grows on you - and it's not typical either (no pun intended with the lyrics) but the beat is hella catchy! NE wayz, if you have money to burn, cop this one...but the non-mentioned tracks are honestly kinda booty. (Except Aaliyah's) But if you're strapped you really should just borrow the CD from a friend. Peace!

Timbaland has done it again ladies and gentlemen. This time it's the "Romeo Must Die" soundtrack. This CD along with "The Best Man" soundtrack is trying to break the tradition of unsatisfactory, left over songs by popular artists to make a CD. The soundtrack starts off with the "Babygirl" herself, Aaliyah and "Try Again". Timbaland , although his beats are familiar sometimes, always finds a way to get your attention. "Try Again" might be in heavy rotation for the rest of the year. Aaliyah and Timbaland are a perfect match for each other. I would've said "Try Again" was the best song on the CD, but then Aaliyah is at it again, this time with the Dark Man himself, DMX with "Come Back In One Piece". This matches the dog himself with Aaliyah and it makes you wonder why the two never did a song together before. Although there are many other good songs on this soundtrack these two Aaliyah songs will catch most of your attention. Other highlights include JOE's "Rose In A Concrete World", Destiny Child's "Perfect Man", B.G.'s "Rollin' Raw" and another Aaliyah classic in the making, "I Don't Wanna". Timbaland is where Puffy used to be and still wants to be right now. His work lately with Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Ginuwine, Destiny's Child, etc. can not be matched by any other r&b producer right now. After listening to this album you'll be asking two questions: When is the next Timbaland produced album coming out? and When is Aaliyah's new album coming out? I don't even think Laurence Fishburne is ready for a "Matrix" like this one.

CENSORSHIP -- Is this whole world becoming Wal-Mart?,
By Julian Himes (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Romeo Must Die: The Album [Edited Version] (Audio CD)
I bought this cd, and enjoyed a couple of the songs, but it bothered me that song #2 and many others were heavily edited. However, I shook it off and dismissed it as what soundtrack producers usually do: edit a couple songs on the cd to avoid the advisory label. It wouldn't have bothered me if I of hadn't realized later that they released an unedited version ALMOST FIVE MONTHS LATER and had given no indication on the first release that it was edited. Of course by this time I had thrown away the receipt and couldn't return the edited cd. Of all the cd sites I've checked, Amazon.com is the only one that gives a clear indication of the two versions of cds. I feel very strongly about censorship and instances like this are truly a disgrace to those of us who like to listen to the original song. But, while this is a negative review of the producers of this cd, it's also a positive review of Amazon.com. It's a fresh breath of air in a censored world to see a site that gives you a choice. Remember that in the future if you have any of these same concerns.

If anyone has seen the opening scenes of this movie in the club and with that big black Mercedes with tinted windows rolling through the streets and heard the hip hop in the background, they would have thought this album would be killer. That's what I thought. Unfortunately a lot of the songs which work really well in the movie don't sound as good without the visual. There are some songs on here which are killer. Aaliyah's first two tunes "Try Again" and "Come Back in One Piece" (w/ DMX) are good with kickin' beats. Also, "Somebody Gonna Die Tonight" (track 12) is also jammin'. A good portion of the rest of the album, unfortunately is just basic, overproduced r&b and/or hip hop with nothing extraordinary. I guess that I kind of feel the same way about this album as I did the movie. Great previews and great potential, but it just doesn't quite live up to the hype. |
