5.0 out of 5 stars Cast Iron is the best
These are some of the best pie irons made. By being round, they completely seal the bread and make great campfire pies. The cast iron pie irons are MUCH better than the cheap aluminum ones you get at W*. Once they get hot, it doesn't take long for the next pie to be done. Plus, if you season it well and take care of it, the cast iron is much easier to maintain than...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great materials, poor fit.
I grew up making and eating "pudgy pies" and have always loved them. But, alas, my old maker finally gave up the ghost some time ago, and, frankly, it wasn't made with the finest materials. It also didn't lie flat. That's why I started looking around for something better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pudgy Pie Iron, February 6, 2009

All of our friends have these - so we had to get some. We use them for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert - while camping and at home in the fire pit. Our breakfasts can't be beat - bread or muffin, with cheese, green salsa, and a fresh egg from one of our chickens! Yum! Our friends recommended the round pie irons over the square ones, since they seem to seal better.

This pie maker is a staple on our camping trips....even for breakfast! It's something teenagers can make themselves in the morning over the still smoldering campfire! My son lived on them in college made on the stove - easy meal - no pans or dishes to do!

These work great! It'll take a few uses before you get them seasoned sufficiently so that the bread doesn't stick to the insides of the pie iron, but you will love these. Make sure you keep them somewhere dry so that they don't rust!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pie maker, January 17, 2009

This was great like I remember from childhood camping. Very sturdy for years of use unlike many on market now. Now making memories around the campfire with grandchildren.

This "pie iron" is made with heavy-gauge iron, and provides much more even cooking on the bread, which is great. It's also nice that the cups lie flat and are easily separated for cleaning.

But the problem is that the cups don't fit tightly together, so the filling leaks out. In my case, it made quite a cheesy mess on my stove.

In all fairness, I've only made one pie so far, and I'm sure I'll try again. But this time I'll put in less filling, which is unfortunate, and I'll put down some foil first. Could be interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars We love our Rome Pie Irons, September 12, 2011
This review is from: Rome's #1805 Round Pie Iron with Steel and Wood Handles (Kitchen)
We love our Rome Pie Irons. We currently have 4 of the round pie irons. But, we like them so well, we'll eventually have a nice collection build up. We use them to make various different camp recipes. They are sturdy and hold up well. Ours our currently seasoned very well. You really need to take the time to prep the pie irons before you use them the first time. They need to be put in the fire to burn off the wax that is on them when they are new. Then, you need to season them, just like you would season any cast iron.

One of the best things about these pie irons is that the two sides come apart for easy preparation and cleaning (not with water or soap).

My family and I had loads of fun this summer making campfire pies with this gadget... just as I remembered doing when I was a kid. Good times :) Oh, and it worked really well too!

We are happy with the quality of the product, but was disappointed as to the smallness of the pie iron. Probably didn't read the description close enough.
