Book Description

February 1, 2006
Ron Mueck, the hyperrealist sculptor, learned his craft making models and puppets for television and movies. He was nearly 40 when his work came to the attention of Charles Saatchi. At Saatchi's urging, he began to show his sculptures in gallery and museum contexts in the late 1990s. They met with astonishment and praise, particularly Dead Dad, a silicon and mixed-media model of Mueck's father's body, perfectly proportioned but less than four feet long, which made its debut at the highly publicized Sensation show. The human presence and perfection of detail in Mueck's work, the realism and mysterious, transfigured quality of his figures, which stems in part from his extravagant liberties with scale, excited immediate international attention. Since then, the artist's fame has increased steadily with each new work. This second, expanded edition of the monograph of record updates the only comprehensive publication on Mueck's work. Bastian's catalogue raisonne lists all of his works to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars sculpture blended with photography, and a lot of sense, March 11, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ron Mueck (Hardcover)
Even since the sixties the idea of getting into a form sculpture able to depict reality in such and instance that can mistake the eye, and play with the mimesis notion in such a way, perception by all means get deceived, has been explored.

In the contemporary work of Mueck this ideas get totally unbounded in a body of work that is a continuos surprise and further more a challenge to visual perception, psycological perception and emotive perception. Just imagine an enormous photograph of a child enhanced to be several meters high. you do? now make it in 3d.., that is what we are talking here.

Children of several floors, gigantic babies, tiny old ladies, make a powerful discourse about a sculpture much more next to a very 'photoshopized' image, even the shworooms look like and art piece with the Muecks in them.
In a world were the shallow and empty conceptual art is everywhere is really refreshing to see this guy work.
This book about the australian artist is in english and german, and contains apart from many if not all of his work in color, a catalogue raisonne list of all his produced work to the date of publication 2005.

Since I really have no interest in today's empty and pretentious art -instalation, conceptual and all those things, you know, that should bare a sign at the enter of the galleries: 'don't drive heavy machinery..' because of their boring charachteristics- normally my shopping list is only of photo books.

But this art book is something so beautiful, that even if you are not an 'art lover' -remember Mueck as the author of many cinema effects like 'Labyrint' prosthetics before becoming a force in the art world- you can have hours of joy and poetic interaction through images full of tenderness, mistery and force.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weird but captivating, April 16, 2008

No book could do justice to seeing Mueck's art in person (for example, the unnatural scales of his sculptures can't be captured in a photograph), but for the Mueck fan, this is a great book. The photos are excellent and the text is informative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely photos, a little short on technique though., April 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ron Mueck (Hardcover)
As a fan of Ron Mueck's work, I was happy to see a compilation of his entire catalog (through 2005), along with information on his exhibitions, as well as permanent displays where selected pieces can be found.

The brief bio was interesting, as I had no idea of his personal background prior to reading it. However, as a student of sculpture, and a curious person in general, I was a bit disappointed with the lack of mention as to his process. I realize he isn't likely to divulge his entire body of technical knowledge to the general public, but a little more insight into it besides "he uses cast fiberglass resins" would've been wonderful.

All things considered, a great art book and conversation piece.
