GREAT, SADLY UNDERAPPRECIATED ROCK AND ROLL,
By
This review is from: Ronnie Hawkins / Folk Ballads of (Audio CD)
I picked this up used, knowing more about Ronnie's back up band than his own work. I was in for a treat. If you like Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, et. al., the first album will move you. The second is sligly less consistent; but the arrangements for the folk songs are interesting, and the performances are strong. How "Love From Afar" failed to become a huge hit is beyond me. The arrangement is comparable to some of the better Elvis material from the period, although I would not substitute vocalists for the track (with all due respect to the King.) If you love and appreciate fifties Rock and Roll, this is essential.
