GREAT HORROR TRAILERS BUT BAD HOMEMADE COMEDY INTERLUDES,
By Explorator (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mad Ron's Prevues From Hell (DVD)
I bought this back in the late 80s when it was only being advertised in Fangoria and it was a cherished VHS tape that lasted me several years and many plays. It shocked quite a few party goers, grossed out the hot chicks and generally entertained the hell out of many people until it was finally eaten in a friend's old VCR. It is essential viewing for horror trailer fans and contains the best single lineup of trailers I've ever seen on video (and I've seen quite a few of them). The ONLY weak parts of the program are the idiotic video interludes by a balding ventriloquist and his corny zombie puppet 'Happy'! They really are annoying and throw lame speed bumps into an otherwise premium collection of trailers. Definitely check this DVD out but beware of several of those very unfunny interruptions.

Awesome trailer disc! Worth it just for the extras if you're a fan,

Like others, I remember seeing this tape years ago when I was a kid. However, I waited until I actually had the product in hand and could write, you know, a legit review before posting one...
This is a horror movie trailer collection from the 80's hosted by a ventriloquist (Nick Pawlow) his zombie sidekick/dummy 'Happy', and crazed projectionist 'Mad Ron'. The setup: Nick and Happy the zombie are in the projection booth of a deserted theater with projectionist Mad Ron (who is chained up for their safety). Fog starts swirling through the dark deserted streets, and Zombies start shambling into the theater to watch the trailers and have some snacks. As more and more zombies show up, Nick starts looking for a way out..What will happen when they run out of trailers? Will Nick escape? Will Happy turn on him? What will happen to Mad Ron? Watch this disc and find out.. This is a pretty great compilation - some of these trailers are available on other discs, but the way this one is put together is non stop entertainment. Also, this is the first time I have seen the Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS trailer show up in a compilation. Picture and Sound quality is surprisingly good having been mastered from videotape. One area where this disc really shines - A lot of trailer compilations don't seem to give much thought to the sequence of trailers - this one actually has a pretty good pacing that keeps it consistently entertaining. I might be biased and nostalgic about this one because I rented it a bunch of times as a kid, but I really liked the comedy bits between trailers with Nick, Happy and Mad Ron. Some of the zombie audience scenes are pretty funny (like their interesting choice of popcorn topping), and the zombie makeups are great! Apparently the makeup artist went on to work on Avatar(!) Always interesting to find out someone's low budget background. Long out of print and very hard to find on tape, this has been rereleased on DVD as a love letter to the fans - This is the way a re-release should be done. I absolutely recommend this as a purchase - It is worth it just for the extras (commentary, an AWESOME poster gallery, set photos, and most incredible - A behind the scenes!) This disc is bound to be as sought after as the original tape. Long Live Mad Ron!

It's funny, and the trailers are classic!,

This was a lucky find at a local DVD shop. Yeah, it's dated, but enjoyable none the less. The sketches before, and in between the trailers are kind of corny, but that's part of the fun. In my eyes, I'm really just watching something made by a horror fan's, horror fans. Who gives a crap about Siskel & Ebert's opinion. Just enjoy the show. Being a collector, my horror movie shopping list has grown a bit taller watching this.
