Editorial Reviews

Review

“Just in time for spring comes Rooftop Gardens: The Terraces, Conservatories, and Balconies of New York by Denise LeFrak Calicchio and Roberta Amon, with photos by Norman McGrath that are so lifelike they could incite your sinuses if not your envy. These sanctuaries are, after all, intensely private, and ordinarily protected even from the view of ordinary mortals.” ~New York Times

“The book, published by Rizzoli, promises to showcase some of the city’s most fabulous outdoor spaces.” ~New York Post

"[Rooftop Gardens] is catnip for people who love plants, trees and flowers set against skyline views." ~Crain's New York Business

"If it weren’t for Rooftop Gardens: The Terraces, Conservatories and Balconies of New York, a new book from Rizzoli by Denise LeFrak Calicchio and Roberta Model Amon, the only way to see most of these spaces would be by helicopter, telescope or a ride on the back of a superhero." ~New York Daily News

"...Garden porn for those who wistfullydaydream of indulging their every horticulturalwhim amid the skyscrapers—and inspiration forthose who actually have access to a rooftop spaceand aren’t quite sure what do to with it." ~New York Observer

"Rooftop Gardens showcases some of the most extraordinary outdoor spaces in New York City. Unlike any other design book of its kind, it provides a rare glimpse into the private outdoor havens of a diverse range of the city's elite." ~Examiner

"High above Sutton Place is a sprawling terrace dotted with sculptures by Murakami and Jeff Koons. If not for Rooftop Gardens... you'd never know it was there. See what else your neighbors have been hiding--from Japanese rock gardens to lush green sanctuaries perched above the treetops of Central Park. Calicchio and Amon have discovered landscapes as diverse as their lucky inhabitants." ~Manhattan

Had I been the photographer for this book I would be jumping up and down and demanding a recall. The quality of the colour reproduction is very poor and certainly not of a standard that does justice to such inspirational settings. The book should be a pleasure but instead I find it extremely frustrating to look at picture after picture and wonder what happened. The pictures have lost any richness and depth of colour - the sort of bleached photo quality you might find in an old picture book used to take up space on the bookcase of a rented beach-house, circa 1950.
Please let me know when a reprint of proper quality is available and I might just buy a second copy and relegate mine too.

Rooftop Gardens is such a pleasurable and enjoyable book. It takes one on a voyeuristic journey of a hidden New York. It's hard to imagine such splendor exists on the tops of this concrete jungle. The pictures beautifully portray a fantasy land that we would all love to visit. Good job and kudos to the authors.

Roberta Amon and Denise Calicchio have created a beautiful book that makes you want to retreat in to that fantasy land where dreams come true. For those of us that live in Manhattan, in just an apartment with no outdoor space, you will now know exactly how much you are missing. What Woody Allen has done for New York in his movies, Ms. Calicchio and Ms. Amon have done in this book - make you feel that New York is truly a beautiful place to live.

Although this book is centered around New York with balconies and terraces overlooking Central Park, I found it very enjoyable. My husband and I found several ideas that we can incorporate for our terrace. My best advice is to make sure everything you do is well anchored and take into account high winds and weight. Our neighbors did not consult a structural engineer (we did thank heavens) and they overloaded their roof, causing $45K in damages to the condo below them plus personal injuries to the occupants. We paid $20K to have our terrace reinforced before we started and we know it is money well spent. We are creating our own private oasis in downtown Atlanta.
