From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9 Dygard continues to turn out pure sport novels in the tradition of John R. Tunis (HBJ) and Matt Christo pher (Little). To these authors the sport is the story, and there are no subplots to muddy the tale. If his latest is not among his better efforts, it still makes for fun reading. Ted Bell, third base man, thinks he's good enough to make it in the majors without playing minor league ball, although he's just out of high school. He is good, but he's too cocky. He foregoes college to sign with the Kansas City Royals, but he finds himself on the bench instead of the base paths. Ted is brought down a few notches by the last page, although he does prove that he has the stuff to be come a hall-of-famer himself some day. It's unlikely that a rookie would go di rectly into the majors from high school today, but readers can give Dygard the benefit of the doubt since he does such a fine job of describing the innings-and- outs of big time baseball. Robert E. Unsworth, Scarsdale Junior High School, N.Y.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book For Sports Readers of all ages, May 17, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rookie Arrives (Paperback)
I read the book The Rookie Arrives by Thomas Dygard. I feel this is a great book. Out of the whole book, there weren't any parts that got boring. I liked the book because it was about baseball. Another reason is that I never really got confused. There weren't any words that i didn't know. I understood the book and what was happening. It is a great book for all ages. I gave the book a 4 star rating because of the reasons stated above. I feel this is the best book I've ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for baseball fans, October 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rookie Arrives (Paperback)
The Rookie Arrives is one of the best baseball books I've ever read. I would only recommend this book to "die-hard" baseball fans. The Rookie Arrives is about a rookie (Ted Bell) who is drafted out of High-school by the Kansas City Royals. He is brought to the team under the impression that he's going to be an everyday player. He gets upset because he finds out that Lou Mills, the Royals everyday third-baseman is going to play everday and Ted won't even get a chance to prove himself. At the All-star game, Lou Mills gets injured and this gives Ted Bell the opportunity to play everyday. His chance to prove himself and earn a spot on the major league roster is now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Follow Your Hopes and Wishes, May 25, 2007
This review is from: The Rookie Arrives (Paperback)
The Rookie Arrives By: Thomas J. Dygard. If you're somebody who likes good sport story, this is one for you. It has all the thinks that are good about sports. You have a rookie coming out of high school thinking he is going to be the best and you know how a rookie has a major ego and never turns out to be what he thought. This player, Ted, gets his shot in the majors, but after a couple of months he doesn't think this was the best decision, until... he gets his chance to show himself. There are no dislikes I had for this book. It is a all around good book. This book makes you won't to follow your dreams and try as hard as you can for something you want to do and eventually you will get your shot.
