Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Rookie Blue aims to be a different kind of cop show, walking a fine line between tough swagger and the emotional impact of all that toughness. Five rookies join a metropolitan police force (Toronto--the series comes from Canada--but the city is virtually generic): Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym, Reaper), daughter of a former cop; Chris Diaz (Travis Milne), a by-the-book guy who lacks initiative; Traci Nash (Enuka Okuma), a single mom having an affair with a detective; Dov Epstein (Gregory Smith), a hothead out to prove himself; and Gail Peck (Charlotte Sullivan), an ice queen who feels like her connections with higher-ups make the other cops think she's not up to snuff. Supposedly the rookies get stuck with the boring or dirty jobs, yet over the course of the 13-episode first season these particular rookies regularly stumble into high-stakes trouble, be it undercover drug busts or a serial pedophile. McNally is the show's center and therefore gets the most complicated romantic life, caught between an edgy undercover cop (whose cover she blew in the first episode) and a charming homicide detective.

Peregrym's combo of tomboy athleticism, healthy farm-girl good looks (the kind that would be called "all-American" if she weren't Canadian), and assertive-yet-vulnerable personality are the essence of the show. It's essentially a more feminine take (more focused on the personal lives and emotional responses of the characters) on a traditionally macho terrain. The show occasionally goes too far with plot turns that push for over-the-top dramatic moments, but even at its most ridiculous--and the routine accumulation of guns-drawn situations can certainly get ridiculous--Rookie Blue remains likable and empathetic. It's a descendent of Hill Street Blues, but a little softer and a lot less quirky. The scripts are swift and efficient but take the time to let the characters interact; there's a sort of emotional breathing room in the show that sets it apart from most contemporary cop shows. The extras are your basic making-of featurettes, no audio commentaries. --Bret Fetzer

5.0 out of 5 stars Blu ray adds a lot to this great show June 5, 2011
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
Summer series are often overlooked but luckily I found ROOKIE BLUE last summer. I was pulled in by Gregory Smith who I had loved on EVERWOOD and what I found was a cop show very unique, addicting and very well made. The show follows 5 rookies right from the very first day they go on the job. The show is perfectly cast. Characters are fleshed out fully and you get to know them and care for them very quickly. We follow the rookies as they learn the job step by step led by their training officers. The detectives in the department are also given full life here. This show is a very realistic look at the lives of newbie rookies.

All dramas attempt that perfect blend of drama, relationships and slight comedy. Few succeed but ROOKIE BLUE does it very succesfully. I just finished watching the first season on blu ray and was very impressed at the character development and depth this series created in only 13 episodes. After just a few I felt like I knew these people. Every week there is an intense drama story to be told while the inter-relationships of the squad always stay in full focus as well. Stand-outs here are Missy Peregrym as rookie Andy McNally and Ben Bass as her training officer Sam Swarek. Their very strong chemistry and give and take relationship is a big part of the glue that holds this show together. And Ben Bass hits the screen here as the next sex symbol just as McDreamy did on Greys Anatomy. But all the other actors are just as strong. From the biggest role to the smallest, each is perfectly cast.

Now to the blu ray. To watch this show in blu ray adds a whole other dimension over the dvd. It comes in an inspired 1080p video transfer and the picture is crisp and detail strong. Colors are vibrant and flesh tones very realistic. The black/white ratio holds strong throughout the day and night scenes. This show has many scans of scenery asnd many close-ups of the cast and the blu ray enhances this tremendously. Action sequences are much more realistic due to the picture clarity. The audio has a Dolby 5.1 or a DTS HD Master Audio option. The DTS option is amazing and all your speakers will be in strong use as city noises, gunshots and voices come out of all speakers. It presents a very realistic listening experience for a strongly dramatic show. If you can pay the little extra for the blu ray you will be very pleased.

I cannot wait for the upcoming second season and highly recommend this show. It is a truly fresh look at rookie life with characters you care for and stories that pull you in fully. Intense drama, romance and realistic relationships make this show rise above many others. Don't miss out on ROOKIE BLUE.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little 'Grey's academy' but so good :) May 20, 2011
Format:DVD
Had this posted at Amazon.UK but thought I'd post it here too:

Started watching this when it started showing in England, I liked it straight away, it is very grey's anatomy hence 'grey's academy' but it really works, after two episodes I was completely hooked.
Don't write this off as your average cop show cos it really isn't. It marries the perfect combination of drama & comedy, with a little romance thrown in for good measure. Missy Peregrym (Reaper) is brilliant as Andy Mcnally the main character & her TO (training officer) Sam Swarek played by a relative unknown- Ben Bass is just as good, they have great chemistry together & not to go all girly but he's quite easy on the eyes ;)
The stories are engaging & heartfelt, the rest of the ensemble cast all play strong characters, I absolutely love this show it gets very funny, also emotional, it doesn't glamourise being a police officer at all, it tells it like it is.
It's not difficult to see why after three episodes airing overseas it got picked up for a second season. Keeping it rookie blue all the way :)

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic summer entertainment!!! August 20, 2011
Format:DVD
Rookie Blue had me hooked from the very first episode. I love the acting and the storylines. Yes, I am very aware it isn't a factual driven police show but as I am not looking to join the police academy a documentary is not required. All I am looking for from this show is entertainment and in that it does it's job.

For those wondering what city they are serving and protecting it is Toronto.
