Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Michael Cole's fifth novel, Room of Dark Secrets, is a story about two ambitious Italian men who come from wildly different walks of life. Although they never meet, they are both searching for a handwritten ancient manuscript on mysticism--each for his own reason.

From the Author

I was on the computer when my twelve-year old grandson asked if I knew what the word "grimoire" meant. I told him I didn't have a clue. When he googled the word, I discovered the term is used to describe books dealing with the occult.

Upon further research, I discovered that the Vatican has one of the largest collections of grimoires in the world. When I began searching for answers as to why the Catholic Church would bother collecting books on mysticism, I came upon some rather intriguing information.

It was this information that enabled me to concoct a plot for Room of Dark Secrets.

More About the Author

As a young boy, I was fascinated with the unknown, the mysterious, and also the unworldly. Ever since I can remember, I enjoyed reading books about archeology. To be the first to enter a crypt, or a tomb that no one had set foot in for three thousand years held a fascination for me. I always wondered what it would be like to encounter an intelligent being from another world. What secrets could he tell? What mysteries could he solve? Such is my imagination, such is my passion.

Since I've never had an opportunity to experience any of those things, I dreamt a lot. The most logical step was to write, but that took years in the making. I soon discovered that in order to hold a reader's interest, a book had to be more than just a good story. Finally, I managed to write on my own.

To date, all nine of my novels contain quest plots. My characters are always searching for "something." They also manage to get themselves into a lot of trouble before they find what they're looking for. What they find isn't nearly as important as the change that occurs within them during the quest.

My grandparents were Russian. During the Bolshevik Revolution they fled to China, where my mother was born. I came to America from France at the age of twelve and immediately traded in my French-version of Lederhosen for a pair of jeans. After earning B.A. and M.A. degrees, I wore a number of different career hats, but none of them ever stirred my soul--until I took up writing.

I now live in Laguna Niguel, California, with my wife, Sharon.

Comments: This book held my attention and my interest
>beginning with the very first page. The two main characters,
>described in depth by the author, make the story move at a fast
>pace. The author presents information to the reader somewhat in the
>same way a school teacher might present information to his/her
>class. This was particulary true during the part that dealt with
>the election of a new Catholic Pope. The end of the story was both
>intriguing and satisifing. In other words.....this book is a good
>read.

Room of Dark Secrets can be read in one long enjoyable session. The fictious story and characters are written very smoothly, and the fast-paced prose kept me enthralled, curious and excited from the first chapter to the last one. Although the book is fictional, many mysteries of the Catholic church are well researched and documented. You will learn how the Pope is elected and how the archives of the Roman Catholic church are preserved and the secrets are protected. It is a fascinating story and one every Catholic person, religious scholar and, yes, every student of magic should read. As a keeper, it is priceless.

Room of Dark Secrets by Michael Cole is thoroughly gripping...the suspense holds you to the very last page. Impossible to put down and a disappointment to finish. Michael Cole has done it again and "hit it out of the Park."
