5.0 out of 5 stars A Hilarious Ride that Will Keep You Laughing Til the End
Katya Morgan is the quintessential poor little rich girl in Brandt's latest romantic comedy, ROOM SERVICE. She's a jetsetting playgirl who's never worked a day in her life - that is until her father dies and she's left with nothing that she hasn't bought herself - which is, well, nothing.

In a new twist on the poor little rich girl story, our female lead character's deceased grandfather whops a load of serious tough love on his playgirl daughter. Hmm..maybe I should forward a copy of this novel to Paris Hilton's grandfather... Alex Sheridan is the hardworking manager of the Royal Palmetto hotel, where Katya is staying. Of course, Katya can no longer pay her quite substantial bill. At the request of Jillian, Katya's `wicked' stepmother, Alex offers Katya a job - as a maid.

Needless to say, comedy commences.

ROOM SERVICE is a hilarious ride that you will be unable to put down. Underneath Katya's cold and calloused exterior are numerous layers, and she slowly evolves from a cold hearted spoiled girl to a sympathetic young women whom all readers will be able to relate to. Of course, this will take the love of a good man. *g* If you are looking for a fun summer read be sure to put ROOM SERVICE at the top of your summer reading list

5.0 out of 5 stars "Room Service" Delivers Romantic Punch, May 3, 2003

Katya Morgan was raised to believe that money equals love. Sent away to baording school upon the death of her mother at age 10, her father has always been absent in every way but one. He's always provided her with every material possession that money can buy. And when he dies and disinherits her, even having her stepmother Jillian take back everything that his money ever paid for, Katya is not only devasted, but broke. When sexy Alex Sheridan, the general manager of the premier Royal Palmetto hotel in Arizona, offers her a job in the housekeeping department, Katya knows she's sunk to a new low. Once a guest, now a lowly housekeeper, Katys is truck with the realization of just how much money it takes to survive. Throw in a saboteur trying to take over Alex's job at the hotel, the hotel owners dimwitted son Chris, a slew of Alex's family, and a drooling dog named "Daisy", and you've got a story you're not likely to forget. I loved "Room Service". Whether it's due to the fact that Ms. Brandt obviosly did her research on the daily runnings of a hotel, or just the fact that the story is a wonderful one, "Room Service" is one book you won't be able to put down.

Hmm..maybe I should forward a copy of this novel to Paris Hilton's grandfather... By forcing the now penniless playgirl to connect with the "real" world and some charming "real" characters (loving Latino family), serious, handsome, hardworking, male lead hotel manager the expected maturity and appreciation for the stuff of life occurs. The setting is in Arizona and the descriptions of gorgeous desert views, add another layer of interest. Nothing particularly special here--just good journeyman level, well crafted contemporary romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Fun!, December 31, 2003
This review is from: Room Service (Mass Market Paperback)
This was the first time I had read a Brandt book, and I'm happy to say it won't be the last. This book mixed together romance, comedy, and even touched on some family values. While some of the comedic scenes are a bit far-fetched, on the whole, it was a very enjoyable book. The writing was fast-paced and entertaining, the storyline continued at a reasonable pace and there were a lot of supporting characters that were well drawn too. The only part I had trouble with was the end - there was a bit of an unexpected twist that really came out of nowhere and made the plot slightly less believable. Overall.. it's well worth your time!

5.0 out of 5 stars lOVED!, September 8, 2003
This review is from: Room Service (Mass Market Paperback)
All it takes is a simple dose of reality when a rich daddy dies and leaves his only daughter "nothing" in his will. Think about how you would feel being spoiled all of your life, getting everything you want, not having the responsibility of a job or caring for a pet and then it all come to a halt with the reading of a will.

I really enjoyed this first ready by Brandt and loved her writing style which always kept me wanting to turn the page to find out what was going to happen next.

Love comes about in mysterious ways and will surely leave a smile on your face as you read the last page.

It was hard to get into the book at first because the main character is such a brat but as I kept on reading, I really got into the book and found it to be quite good.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible writing, September 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Room Service (Hardcover)
I hate to write negative reviews, but I really did think this book was terrible. Other people have left positive reviews, and I can't imagine why. The writing was terrible, the plot was utterly predictable, and the characters were completely one dimensional. Katya, the main character, was far too whiny, and she never did become likeable. Alex Sheridan, the knight in shining armor, was so over-the-top chivalrous/sucker for a damsel in distress it made me want to puke. The ending (before the utterly predictable part) was one of the most ridiculous and contrived things I've ever read. It came out of nowhere and did not fit the story.

I suppose if you're looking for an unimpressive and cliche romantic read to pass a couple hours, this would do. I, however, do not recommend it to anybody and will probably not read anything else by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars I wanted more!, December 4, 2008
This review is from: Room Service (Mass Market Paperback)
I love Beverly Brandt's writing, but boy, did she make things hard on herself with this one!

The prologue sets up the heroine as a spoiled rich girl whose father's just cut her out of his will. Suddenly penniless, she finds herself unable to pay a several-thousand-dollar hotel bill, and ends up taking a job in housekeeping at the hotel to pay it back and to save up enough money to hire a lawyer to break her father's will.

My only problem with this story is that I wanted more. I wanted to see more of her conflicted feelings about her father, more of her struggling to accept that she has to earn money at least temporarily, more of the developing emotional connection between herself and the hero, the manager of the hotel. I get that it's a light story, so you don't want too much angst, but this author's pulled off that feat before, so I expect more.

4.0 out of 5 stars A more-than-serviceable read, May 25, 2003
By
Desmond Chan (Bishan North Singapore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Room Service (Mass Market Paperback)
Beverly Brandt's romance are self-admittedly fluff-light and Room Service shares the same dose of magical escapism. Jet-setter and heiress Katya Morgan finds herself disinherited by her father in a codicil and her luxuries auctioned off. Her stepmother Jillian tries in vain to help; she has to pay off her stay at Royal Palmetto Hotel in Arizona by working as a hotel maid. Jillian coaxes general manager Alex Sheridan to offer her a position and this soft-hearted alpha male begins to shatter her defenses to people and even love and concern offered by Sheridan's grandmother Nana and sister Inez.

Brandt wisely avoids stereotypes and injects warmth and complexity into her characters. She engages readers to understand that money was the only connection to her father's love and how her mother's departure shuttered her. She avoids intimacy with Alex for fear of hurting. An unbelievable side-plot of a saboteur to the hotel provides some suspense but Brandt's characters including Daisy the dog and the quirk Mr. Egger hold their own along with Brandt's meticulous research in hotelier management for a more-than-serviceable read.
