Book Description

August 1, 2007
"Sweetie, I'm home." I tried to put as much kindness into my voice as possible. I didn't want to have another argument - at least not right away. Silence. "Sweetheart?" A gunshot echoed from our bedroom, followed by the sound of a bullet casing skipping along a wall. Everything slowed down. When a life is destroyed, when guilt says you played a role in its destruction, how do you face the days ahead? Twenty-six-year-old Abel Keogh chooses to ignore the promptings he receives concerning his wife's mental illness, and now he feels he is to blame for her choices. If only he had listened . . . At some point in our lives, each of us face devastating afflictions and must eventually cope with loss. Regardless of how it happens, the outcome is still the same - we are left isolated, alone, wondering what we could have done differently, and where we can turn for peace. This is Abel's story in his own words. His search for peace and the miracle that follows is proof that love and hope can endure, despite the struggles and tragedies that shape each of our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing read., September 12, 2007
This review is from: Room for Two (Paperback)
Anyone would love this book.I couldn't put the book down from the time I started it. It is well written, and uplifting, if you can imagine the subject matter being uplifting. Abel writes from the heart, and you literally feel what he is feeling. I was surprised to read a book written by a man that had so much feeling expressed. I would recommend this book to anyone, not just someone who is going through a similar circumstance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tear jerking, October 2, 2007
This review is from: Room for Two (Paperback)
I loved this book. Not only did it grip me from the start, make me cry, and consume my thoughts for a few days, I also loved that it didn't end in an unrealistic way. I had so many questions I wanted answered (as I am sure the author did as well) so when some of those questions remained at the end, it forced me to accept that much of grief and loss has no answers or simple solutions, but life can still go on. Thus, it left me to feel the loss and accept it (like I have had to do in my life). It truly is a sad story with a feeling of renewal at the end.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Quiet Criticism, April 11, 2009

I hesitate to write a criticism of this book, since it is a heartbreaking story, recounting an experience that must have caused the author unspeakable grief. Looking back on this book, though, I feel as though I should register an honest criticism of this book.

The book reminds me of Job 14:22, "They feel only the pain of their own bodies, and mourn only for themselves." I have no doubt that the author is sincere, but his portrayal of his late wife seems to lack in sympathy. The book provides us with very little insight into the situation or into the people involved. It only registers the anger and pain the author felt after the suicide of his wife.

The book does not wrestle with tough questions. It is too clean and easy. I find it strange that at the end of the book the author concludes that the suicide of his wife was God's divine plan -- an opportunity provided for him to meet his new wife. The author seems to be less angry in the end but otherwise seems unchanged by the experience.

It is an unpleasant thing to criticize a piece of writing that is someone's honest and candid expression of themselves, but in my opinion this book does not unpack the situation well. The author grieves, and we grieve with him, but in the end we gain very little from the author's recounting of his experience.
