Product Description

The Roomba 440 Cordless Robot vacuums so you don't have to. Just press the clean button and Roomba does the rest. Its powerful vacuum and counter-rotating brushes reach deep into your carpet to remove dirt, dust and pet hair. Virtual walls tell it where to clean by restricting off-limit areas, and it automatically senses and avoids stairs and drop offs, so it cleans the whole floor, under and around furniture and along walls. Unit automatically adjusts to vacuum carpets and hard floors, and senses dirtier areas that need more thorough cleaning. Spot mode quickly cleans up spills and concentrated messes.

I got this through an Amazon owned affiliate company and have used it five times now on various surfaces. I don't have any pets and there's just two people living in a fairly small house (1200 sq ft), so its more dusty that really dirty. The Roomba 440 does a great job on short pile carpet in the bedrooms and hall. I had vacuumed about five days early with a good canister vacuum, but the Roomba still picked up a ton of dust, lint and hair. It did an especially good job under the beds. I moved small furniture items out of the rooms and draped electric cords up out of the way, so the Roomba had no issues getting stuck. The living room and dining room have wood laminate with area rugs and that was more problematic. The Roomba would bump on the area rug hem (no tassels, just a thick sewn hem) and reacted as if it hit a wall. Eventually it would come at the right angle and find a way up on the rug. It did cause it to take longer than it should have to clean the room because of that though. It does a great job on tile and laminate, but again, area rugs are a bit of a problem for it.

Still, I really like this little appliance. I just smile at how good of a job it does...and I really wasn't expecting much from what I thought was a "toy". I understand from reading reviews that they can have a pretty short life span (about a year), but for what I paid that would still be worth it (and I would replace it!).

Edit - June 2013. Still working fine! I did have to replace the battery this spring (got one of the generic ones from Amazon for much less than a "genuine" Roomba one). Other than that, still very happy with it.

This is my second Roomba and I love them. If you have hard wood floors and no time to sweep this is gold! Be aware that they still aren't perfect. It will get caught on cords, and try to kill itself with a lost sock. You will probably be replacing it in 2 years. That said I run mine twice a week and love it.

I have had my Roomba now for about a month, and he.... ooops, *it* is wonderful! I have an open plan kitchen, living room and dining room, and the battery will run long enough to clean the entire area if the clutter is picked up. Leaving items on the floor, like a laundry basket or some shoes, will require the Roomba to do extra work cleaning around the item, and then the battery sometimes poops out before finishing the space. Sooooo..... suddenly the family is picking up things off the floor! Our Roomba has carpet, hard wood, and slate tile to contend with and all look great. Roomba will just roll from one to the other with no issues. Twice my Roomba has gone under the (saggy) couch and gotten stuck, but every other time (this would be at least three times per day for a month - Roomba goes over the same spots again and again) it just does its work under there and comes right back out. I did decide to block under the couch yesterday since it doesn't really need to be vacuumed daily and I don't want the Roomba to get stuck while I am out of the house. Upstairs Roomba cleans two small bedrooms and a master bedroom and two bathrooms on one charge.

I have had no trouble with Roomba on throw rugs or my thin welcome mats, but Roomba gets choked on my floppy rag rug in my kitchen and one thick, rubber based bathroom rug. The other bathroom rug I have is medium thickness and Roomba handles those fine. You do want to keep the cords away or block them off. The virtual walls with this 440 work great but we have barely used them after the first few times... they are on batteries and it just seemed like a waste to use the batteries when you could just set down a basket or plastic bin to block Roomba from "protected areas".
The spot cleaner works great, especially if you made a "spot" mess...

If you have multiple pets, long-haired pets, short, bald or in-between critters--YOU GOTTA HAVE THIS THING!

I'll admit that my expectations for this presumed "gizmo" were quite low. However, with 3 cats and a 70 lb black Pit Bull, it was certainly worth a try. Two days into watching this amazingly effective device do its thing, it was clear that the ROOMBA 440 was a keeper. I let it run overnight, turned it over and marveled at the sight. Neatly packed into the reserve tank was handfuls of pet hair, kitty litter, coins and even a whole grape that found its way into a corner. Make no mistake- this is a real vacuum cleaner. Granted, the power is low, but read on- the "program" has the Roomba vacuuming the entire room at least 3 or four times. 25 minutes later both carpet on wood floor were spotless. The amount of fur and dirt picked up is nothing short of astonishing.

A bit about the device itself. The Model 440 is packaged with the same care and presentation you'd expect from hi-end electronics. It is ready to work almost immediately (although I let it charge until "full", which was about 10 minutes later). From box to floor (minus battery charge) is about 1 minutes. You insert the battery (slide it in and "click") place it on your floor and touch the big illuminated button on top. A cheery song confirms your activation, and and away it goes!.

For what it does, the noise level is unobtrusive (similar to a good hand vac)-- but the performance blows away anything I've ever seen in any hand vac. I won't bore you with specific operations. All you need to know is that 25 minutes later, your living area, bedroom, kitchen- even tile floors look like the maid just left. Do you really need to know anything else?
