5.0 out of 5 stars The best since Arise
Sepultura haven't made an album this good in 12 years. This album is much faster and heavier than against or nation. Anyone who doesn't believe in post-max sepultura needs only to listen to this cd. 2.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing
I am a Sepultura fan, and I like "Chaos A.D." and "Roots" the best (the early stuff rules as well), but when Max Cavalera left the band in 1996 and Derrick Green took over for vocals, the CD's have been extremely disappointing. "Against" is the one I like the best, but I couldn't get into "Nation" or "Roorback".

I purchased this about a year ago, as I wanted to...

Sepultura haven't made an album this good in 12 years. This album is much faster and heavier than against or nation. Anyone who doesn't believe in post-max sepultura needs only to listen to this cd. Derrick's vocals are in top form and he shows that he is a more powerful and dynamic singer than max ever was. Paulo's bass is more noticeable to me than ever before, with a scattering of really cool bass lines throughout the cd. Andreas' guitar work is faster than it has been in recent years, and, thankfully, the great solos are BACK! But the best part of this album is, of course, Igor's drumming. If that is any surprise to you then you must not know Sepultura.
Come Back Alive, Corrupted, Mindwar, Leech, The Rift, and Activist are all great, fast songs. Apes of God is a mid-paced song with a really good riff and some NASTY drumming. More of the Same, Bottomed Out, Urge, and As It Is are all more unique songs showcasing Derrick's clean and varied vocals. I think the only one I didn't mention yet is Godless. It's a fairly heavy song, kind of on the slow side, and it really grows on you. This whole cd is excellent and a GREAT comeback for Sepultura. I Urge everyone to check this out. You won't be disappointed. Standout songs are The Rift, More of the Same, Come Back Alive, and all the others.

I purchased this about a year ago, as I wanted to listen to some newer Sepultura and this album wasn't available on Napster. I was really disappointed. "Come Back Alive" is a decent opener, but it tends to trail on like this on most of the tracks. "Mind War" was a decent track, but it never caught my attention. However, I liked the U2 cover of "Bullet The Blue Sky", even though I hate U2 with a passion. But the outcome is that it is easy to forget this CD. If you must buy it, buy it used, like bloodlust 69 recommended. Just be glad that this isn't as disappointing as (*cough* St. *cough* Anguish *cough*).

How much longer do we have to listen to people denigrate the work of Sepultura after Max Cavalera?

If you can't hear the quality of the songwriting and arranging in this album, then you just aren't listening. Sepultura post-Max have developed into one of the most mature and intelligent thrash band on the planet; Derrick Green sings his ass off, Andreas Kisser's writing is world class and the overall production quality is given more attention than it ever did when Max was in the band. And above all, they aren't afraid to try new approaches, which many fans of the old line up seem to feel threatened by....

Too many people are obsessed with the cult of personality, and can't/won't accept that Sepultura can thrive, let alone exist, without Max.

If you want to hear Max, listen to Soulfly. If you wany to hear bleeding edge thrash, check this release out, but above all, try to keep your mind and your ears open.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metal Lives, September 4, 2003

This review is from: Roorback (Audio CD)
In a world filled with K-mart metal, and proceesed pop; Roorback is a breath of fresh air. Bringing the intsensity and insanity of what metal has always been back into the limelight. Every song is ferocious and impactful and down right amazingly crafted. The bonuss disc "Revolusongs" showcases Sepultura's divine ability to cover songs and make them their own. "Bullet the Bly Sky" by U2 and Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song" are my favorite of the cover tunes. I would say my favorite album track, but there are too many that top the list for me. If you love metal, you'll love Roorback.

2.0 out of 5 stars Do you like chaos ad? if yes do not hear this album, January 5, 2011
This review is from: Roorback (Audio CD)
Where is the passion and the thrash <<melody>> which was in chaos ad? I liked very much chaos - roots - arise. But this album is so poor. Its so monotonous without any song that can be named as a <<hit>>. Its a really boring album. See for yourself if you want

4.0 out of 5 stars Furious hardcore mixed with great metal, June 15, 2009
This review is from: Roorback (Audio CD)
Roorback is the best album from Sepultura with Derrick. He shows his own style, and it's very good. Like Against and Nation, Roorback shows a furious hardcore mixed with metal. The truth is that Sepultura is a new band without Max, and it's a great band, for sure. The band is really connected and far more creative in this new Sepultura. Open your mind and forget Max, and you will find a great hardcore metal band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!, October 19, 2005

This review is from: Roorback (Audio CD)
Sepultura used to be my favorite thrash band many years ago and the Max days are still some of the best music thrash has ever had. When Max left it was a sad day for metal, however I still dig Sepultura w/Derrick as the singer. I did like Against and Nation, but Roorback destroys both of them. I mean it's good to have the thrashiness back. Come Back Alive and my favorite The Rift are incredible songs. Apes of God is heavy and has some great bass parts.

If you did not really get into the other 2 cd's w/Derrick you still may want to pick this up. They definitely are thrashing again, the tribal beats are gone and they have returned, sort of, to their old roots. Be openminded, Sepultura is not what they once were, but they have evolved and this cd proves they still can write kick butt music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Roorback- one of the best albums of 2003., August 13, 2004
This review is from: Roorback (Audio CD)
It really is sad that Derrick will forever be compared to Max. Both are very good metal frontmen with incredible writing and vocal abilities, and after Max left Sepultura in 1996, Max went and is doing his thing in the under-rated Soulfly and Derrick came in and is doing his thing with the new Sepultura. The bottom line is, this new sepultura isn't the 80's thrash sepultura or the early-mid 90's tribal sepulutra. This new style actually isn't bad at all when you stop expecting them to be thrash or tribal.

lets go through the albem track by track:

COME BACK ALIVE- this is perhaps the best sepultura song since the ROOTS album. with a suitably creepy intro, it rocks out in a similar style to Refuse-Resist. 5/5

GODLESS- This gem is sure to become a concert and all-around band staple, like INNER SELF was. 5/5

APES OF GOD- this is not as good as the first 2, but has enough to keep you off the skip button. 4/5

MORE OF THE SAME- I don't like this song that much, but it's better than most music today. 3/5

URGE- ditto #4 3/5

CORRUPTED- Just what we all need at this point, after the 2 worst songs on the album are past us, how about a speed-metal rampage with a killer solo to help out? 5/5

AS IT IS- this is really what urge and more of the same wanted to be. With thought-provoking lyrics and nice guitars, this is excellent5/5

MINDWAR- kinda like corrupted, except heavier and with a better vocal performance. 5/5

LEECH- another speed-metal song, which unforunetly slows down if I remember correctly. 4/5

THE RIFT- this excellent song hearkens back to Arise's "Altered state" (opinion, I may be wrong). 5/5

BOTTOMED OUT- semi-ballad which is incredibly creepy and has an incredible atmosphere. 5/5

ACTIVIST- my favorite of the speed-metal songs, ends very abruptly and should've been the last song. 5/5

Unfortunetly, we have a 13 minute snoozer of a "song" which probably shouldn't be on the album. Also, If you can get it with the bonus disc, do it for MESSIAH and PIRAHNA.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sepultura returns to form, January 28, 2004
This review is from: Roorback (Audio CD)
"Roorback" is a monumental album for Sepultura for more than one reason. It is the first album not to be on Roadrunner Records (Sepultura left the label soon after their previous release, 2001's "Nation"), and it is undoubtadly the best album to feature singer Derrick Green. Most of the band's tribal type sound that has been a part of Sepultura is hardly here; instead we are treated to a pounding thrash blast that is very reminiscent of the band's legendary early years. Standout tracks include the excellent opener "Come Back Alive", "Godless", "Apes of God", "As It Is", and "The Rift", all of which is the best material from Sepultura in almost a decade. It still can't compare with "Arise" or "Beneath the Remains", but "Roorback" is a welcome return to form for the Brazilian bashers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw and in your face energy at it's best!!!!, September 11, 2003

pelfmon (paris, kentucky USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Roorback (Audio CD)
This album is what a lot of Sep fans have wanted for a long time, Fast and raw. Derrick Green rips away on this album and even makes the slower, cleaner parts sound powerful. Kissers ear piercing solos are back and man can he shatter ear drums or what!!! Igor is his usual, you can rely on him to be the best at what he does, and pounds the hell out of the drums on this album. And the bass.....just listen to the first part of corrupted real loud...BOOOOOM!!!!! Paulo flattens everything. Give this album some wheels and you got a deadly weapon at your disposal. This is stripped down basic full frontal metal at it's finest. Don't expect anything complicated here, this is the ABC's of metal in the hands of maniacs.

On a down note this album is selling horribly partly because of the delayed release because of trying to seal a US record deal. Only sold 4,000 copies in the first week. Come on now there are more metal and Sep fans out there than 4,000. Do yourself and the band a favor and buy the album.
