5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely awesome
My experience with the flute was limited to the recorder and the concert flute in my woodwind methods class. I purchased the Cocus Irish Flute with key. While that one was easy after practice, to this day, I still cannot get the lowest note D and still have difficulty getting some notes out with out pressing the key to vent them. However, with the Irish Flute without key,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty to look at, not so easy to play
The Irish Rosewood Flute is beautiful to look at but not that easy to play. The E note is particularly weak and whispy sounding and the tuning is not very good from note to note. I find I have to make a lot of note by not adjustment to play something in tune. I pretty much have stopped playing the Irish Rosewood Flute, but did not return it because I enjoy the look of...

However, with the Irish Flute without key, I did not have that problem. Granted, my Rosewood flute is slightly longer than my cocus keyed, but it responds well. It is very fun to play.
For this instrument, the rosewood is very beautiful, more so then cocus I think. The finger holes are wider apart than on a traditional concert flute. The sound has that nice airy, celtic feel that I like to hear. Some of the tuning on the notes seems off but that's just my formal musical training kicking in. Since it's more a folk instrument, it suits nicely. The head joint moves in and out easily for tuning. Be sure you use cork grease on the cork when putting together the instrument. My came with cork grease and a fingering chart.
The only downfall for me is the lack of chromaticism. That aside, I have no problems. As well, seeing how the notes respond due to the vent holes on the foot joint, I have come to the conclusion that my cocus keyed merely needs a vent hole...or maybe not. For my sake, it does. Again, I fully recommend this flute. It plays smoothly.

this company has variable quality flutes. low d is hard to get out- a common complaint and a huge failing in an irish music intended instrument.
