Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–Silenced by a sore throat, Rooster is unable to wake up Farmer Ted. The bird rouses the hens with a "Cough!" and they join him to awaken the cows, summon the sheep, and then wake up the pigs. Together, the animals implement a plan to get Farmer Ted out of bed. Once this is accomplished, he needs help to finish the chores before day's end. After the farmer brews warm tea and honey to soothe Rooster's sore throat, the rest of the gang assists him with the milking, feeding, egg gathering, and shearing. By sunset, the work is finished and Rooster has regained his crow. The story moves quickly and the text is packed with amusing puns. Cleanly executed in pencil, ink, marker, and colored pencil, the brightly colored, realistic cartoons add humor to the story. The pigs especially are real hams as they go about their share of the labor. The large size and simplicity of the drawings will work well for groups.–Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH

A most delightful book and teaches an important lesson about everyone being a very important "cog in the wheel" and the value of helping each other out in times of need. The illustrations are wonderful and the story is captivating to a variety of ages in children - adults, too. Fun to read to little people.

5.0 out of 5 stars What would happen if a rooster got a sore throat?, November 5, 2010
Have you ever wondered what would happen if a rooster got a sore throat? No? Well, think about it! Who's going to wake up the farmer? And if the farmer doesn't wake up, who's going to feed the animals and do the chores? It could be total chaos!!
The young children I teach love this silly story. The farm animals work together to help Rooster get close enough to the farmer so that his scratchy, soft voice can be heard - then they work together to help the farmer, who's now late in starting the day's chores.
Cute illustrations, funny story, and the positive message of helping each other - this story has it all! It also gets kids talking about sore throats and how to take care of them (rest, have soup, don't talk too much, etc.).

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not too my taste, not a favorite of my kids, August 23, 2009
The illustrations were definitely very cute, but this story was a bit too fantastical for me. I don't mind the occasional story like The Little Red Hen where the animals act as people would, but in general, I prefer reading that is somewhat more realistic. The animals in this story were brainstorming on how to wake the farmer since rooster had a sore throat, making a pyramid of bodies to reach the farmer's window to wake him, which actually was a silly idea even if they were people. It's just too silly for my tastes.

Also, I found it rather repetitive in the early part as they gather more animals together to consider the problem. The book was fine, and my kids like it well enough. But, it's not a favorite of mine or theirs, and it'll probably get passed onto Goodwill the next time I clean off the bookshelf. We have plenty of other books that we all like better.
