A most delightful book and teaches an important lesson about everyone being a very important "cog in the wheel" and the value of helping each other out in times of need. The illustrations are wonderful and the story is captivating to a variety of ages in children - adults, too. Fun to read to little people.

What would happen if a rooster got a sore throat?,
This review is from: Rooster Can't Cock-a-Doodle-Doo (Paperback)
Have you ever wondered what would happen if a rooster got a sore throat? No? Well, think about it! Who's going to wake up the farmer? And if the farmer doesn't wake up, who's going to feed the animals and do the chores? It could be total chaos!!
The young children I teach love this silly story. The farm animals work together to help Rooster get close enough to the farmer so that his scratchy, soft voice can be heard - then they work together to help the farmer, who's now late in starting the day's chores. Cute illustrations, funny story, and the positive message of helping each other - this story has it all! It also gets kids talking about sore throats and how to take care of them (rest, have soup, don't talk too much, etc.).

Okay, but not too my taste, not a favorite of my kids,
This review is from: Rooster Can't Cock-a-Doodle-Doo (Paperback)
The illustrations were definitely very cute, but this story was a bit too fantastical for me. I don't mind the occasional story like The Little Red Hen where the animals act as people would, but in general, I prefer reading that is somewhat more realistic. The animals in this story were brainstorming on how to wake the farmer since rooster had a sore throat, making a pyramid of bodies to reach the farmer's window to wake him, which actually was a silly idea even if they were people. It's just too silly for my tastes.
Also, I found it rather repetitive in the early part as they gather more animals together to consider the problem. The book was fine, and my kids like it well enough. But, it's not a favorite of mine or theirs, and it'll probably get passed onto Goodwill the next time I clean off the bookshelf. We have plenty of other books that we all like better.

This Book Mooooved Me!,

This review is from: Rooster Can't Cock-a-Doodle-Doo (Paperback)
Rostoker-Gruber's collection of smart, cooperative barnyard animals is both clever and funny. Each group of animals displays an distinctive, and often appropriate, personality type, especially when faced with the challenge of completing a list of chores after Farmer Ted oversleeps due to Rooster's lack of "cockadoodledoo." The story moves at a quick pace, and the illustrations complement the author's sense of humor. This book will charm kids and make parents laugh, all while showing that if there is cooperation, a bad day can often turn out quite well.
