I went with kind of a rooster-themed kitchen, mainly because I was finding some great pieces in what I guess would be called, "Tuscan" colors. This rooster has added just the perfect amount of whimsy to my kitchen without being overwhelmingly cutesy or distracting in cartoonish colors.
The good: The rooster performs as advertised...that is, it sits on my island and announces what's on the menu for the evening, gives a little love in the form of "Have a nice day!" and other assorted messages penned (or would that be chalked?) by my husband or me and reminds me to pick up a gallon of milk via his "chalkboard" tummy. Contrary to a previous review, chalk is included...it is difficult to find in the packaging and I have no doubt the reviewer accidentally threw it away. The rooster is packaged in a sandwich of styrofoam and there is a hole drilled into one of the end pieces of the foam that contains the chalk. It is in there fairly tight and won't just fall out and with white chalk in white syrofoam, it is difficult, to say the least, to find. You will want to run outside and doodle on your sidewalk or driveway to get the chalk tip to a finer point in order to use it effectively on the chalkboard stomach of the rooster. And speaking of which...now comes the not-so-good-but-not-that-terrible stuff: The chalkboard tummy isn't true chalkboard. This item is made of resin and while the stomach is coated with something that does allow for chalk writing on it and it can be wiped clean, it isn't as easy to write on as you might expect. A fix for this might be to give the area a coating or two of chalkboard paint, but I have no idea if it would really make a difference. It is perfectly functional as is; just don't expect the same surface you remember from grammar school when you did your addition, subtraction and "gozintas" (division - 4 "gozinta" 8 how many times? *LOL*) on the chalkboard in front of the class.

It's a cute little thing. Doesn't come with the chalk like it shows, but I probably didn't read the fine print. How hard is it to get chalk anyway? Definitely worth the $8!
