5.0 out of 5 stars Root and Branch, December 21, 2011
This review is from: Root and Branch : African Americans in New York and East Jersey, 1613-1863 (Paperback)
Hodges has done an excellent job of destroying the myth of "happy slaves" in the North. The slave system in the North was just as awful as in the South, and had devastating effects on the social and family lives of the slaves. They reacted by rioting, attacking their owners, and filing numerous lawsuits to get out of slavery. Highly recommended.
