I bought this book for my husband who is a baseball fact addict. He loved the book. He isn't a big reader, but he finished this one in a very short time and now quotes from it!!! You can't appreciate a book more than that.

There is gold to be mined on every page of Tim Hagerty's "Root for the Home Team," which details the reasoning behind the most unusual (in some cases, ridiculous) names in Minor League Baseball's history. The book is organized by state, which puts the Mobile (AL) Oyster Grabbers in the leadoff spot and sets the tone perfectly. Included with each team profile is an additional bit of awesome information; with Mobile, for example, Hagerty tells the story of a 1910 game that lasted only 32 minutes, with each batter agreeing to swing at the first pitch. Further in, you'll meet the Ilion Typewriters, Poughkeepsie Honey Buns, and the intimidating Suffolk Goobers. This is a sensational collection compiled through outstanding research and a firm sense of the true heart of the national pastime.

I love minor league baseball, so I had to grab this book. It's lots of fun, perfect for flipping through while watching a game. You get a little bit more than a baseball card's worth of info for each team, with some great trivia. How can you not love a book that gives you the history of the Kalamazoo Celery Pickers?

I just read Root for the Home Team: Minor League Baseball's Most Off-the-Wall Team Names and the Stories Behind Them and thought I would put in a plug for it. It's short (about 100 pages) but features minor league teams from 49 states and Canada. The teams in the book span from the late 1800's to today, and the introduction paints the story of a modern resurgence of goofy team names after a couple decades of largely bland ones. Root for the Home Team is a tour through a small-town America, as the teams themselves take on the character of local industry and history (Casketmakers, Osteopaths, Typewriters) and just plain quirkiness (Perfect Gentlemen). I read through it pretty quickly but it's a great random flip through / bathroom book.
