4.0 out of 5 stars Halting Cattle Theft, July 27, 2010
By
This review is from: Rootin Tootin Rhythm [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Rootin' Tootin' Rhythm, 1937 film

The film begins with a rodeo behind the titles. A rodeo was a form of entertainment where people demonstrated their working skills. There is a comic song to entertain you. This ranch has not had any cattle stolen. There are more jokes. Five new cowboys show up for work, and show their skills. Outside, cattle thieves appear to steal the guarded herd. They will have a bid day tomorrow. Two riders are chased by lawmen, they hide to escape. These outlaws will cross the border. Gene and Smiley dress in the discarded clothes as a disguise. [No one carried identification or passports.] The ranchers suffer from cattle thieves, they lost property and lives. But their disguise works too well, Gene and Smiley are identified as the rustlers because of their clothes! [Mistaken identification is a common reason for convicting the innocent.] Could the head of the Cattlemen's Association be in cahoots with the rustlers? "Its them!"

What will Uncle Joe Stafford do with them? Business partners! "A smart girl can make a fool of any man." People take shelter from the storm. Those two outlaws show up, Stafford tells them where to hide. Gene and Smiley sleep, the girls tie them up. The real outlaws show up, and plan to kill Gene and Smiley. But they escape! Gene's men show up to get the captured outlaws. Now Gene and Smiley must go to rescue Rose and Maria from the outlaws while their coach is moving. Gene sings a song with Armida to provide a happy ending. "Goodbye." And so the cowboys ride off.

This has a complicated plot with a lot of humor for a story about cattle thievery. Cattle thieves bring bankruptcy and poverty to their victims. An important businessman is exposed as the source of this thievery, he profits by selling the cattle in another jurisdiction, like an arbitrageur.
