5.0 out of 5 stars For fans of Jazz and Acid Jazz alike, August 2, 2001

There must be a dozen compilation albums claiming to contain "The Roots of Acid Jazz," that funky fusion of Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop and Groove that you can hear in clubs across the nation. This is the first collection that I have heard that truly addresses the "Roots" by presenting a superb collection of Jazz hits at their original best, before they were sampled, mixed and funked into a different level of sophistication. The 14 tunes are all equally excellent, and of a wide range of tastes, but truly make for a fine listening experience. Highly recommended.

about thirteen years ago i bought this album. funny thing, it had different songs on it than what is listed here. very confusing. same cover art. the song i remember most from the cd is "beautiful berkshire", by roland kirk from his album,

"rip, rig and panic". i would recognize some of the other songs if i saw them. i don't know if it is a typo or what? i have ordered this cd hoping it is the one i had before. if it is,i would rate it five stars. if it is not...well, i just

don't know. i am somewhat perplexed

5.0 out of 5 stars best and most accessible jazz album you can find, September 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Roots of Acid Jazz (Audio CD)
Compilation albums are for housewives and little girls...except for this one. This album from Impulse brings Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments," a song with the some of the most beautiful melodies you'll ever hear, with classics such as Louie Armstrong's "Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac."

Every student needs at least one jazz album. Not just for background music while you're cooking or studying, but you have to prove to the world that you're worldly enough to enjoy something that wouldn't be played on the radio.

If you need only one jazz album, this is the one. It doesn't have boring types of jazz like ragtime or new orleans jazz, and it doesn't have jazz such as bebop that will lose novice listeners. It has accessible harmonies. And with rhythms informed from latin music and R&B, no listener can keep themselves from tapping their toe.
