Excellent selection/compilation of tunes loosely related to influencing the writings of Bob Dylan. Even the casual listener will recognize familiar melodies and bits of lyrics from these compositions that later surface in Dylan's own work. Artists range from Charlie Poole & Charley Patton to the Carter Family & Woody Guthrie thru Elvis Presley & Gene Vincent. Styles include acoustic blues, folk, country & R&R. Set contains nothing terribly obscure but also nothing you are likely to hear on the radio. These sixty songs are all available on other CD sets but this remains a superb, single collection. Works as a great introduction to early American music a/w/a just something to sit back with and enjoy.
Four stars because of the lack of any jazz recordings or recordings post-1960. Check out the MOJO disk of the same name. |
