Roots has by now become somewhat of a classic among those knowledgeable in complementary and alternative medicine. It is based on a collection of papers presented at a 1983 symposium to honor Linus Pauling, plus additional manuscripts. While most of the original symposium presentations by colleagues and admirers of Dr. Pauling appear in the book, additional chapters have been included that significantly broaden its scope. The book is divided into three sections: Biochemistry of Disease, Nutrition and Health, and The Scientist as Citizen. The latter category includes personal views of Dr. Pauling's social and political activism, plus Pauling's thoughts on the future of orthomolecular medicine.

About the Author
Richard P. Huemer received his M.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles and his research training at the California Institute of Technology, where Dr. Pauling taught for many years. Now retired after 30 years of orthomolecular practice, he writes on health policy, advises other physicians, and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine. He has engaged in the practice of complementary and alternative medicine for over 25 years. He currently practices in Lancaster, California. He is the co-author or editor of three other health books, writes a health column for Let's Live Magazine, serves as Associate Editor of Clinical Practice of Alternative Medicine, and is a member of the Los Angeles County Task Force on Nutrition.
