5.0 out of 5 stars Skindred does it again..., October 28, 2007
By
This review is from: Roots Rock Riot (Audio CD)
Skindred's proper sophomore release (Babylon got re-released with a few different tracks!) is incredible. They've managed to maintain their original sound (a blend of metal, dancehall, and reggae; or, as they like to call it, Ragga Punk Metal) established on Babylon and yet manage to gain new ground on this, Roots Rock Riot.

Tracks like "State of Emergency" and "Alright" really showcase Benji Webbe's vocal capability, while others, like "Rude Boy for Life," "Spit out the Poison," and "Cause Ah Riot" show that they're willing to take their musical extremes just that much further.

Having attended one of their first concerts (10/26/07) following Root's release, they've already incorporated 5 tracks into their set list: "Roots Rock Riot," "Trouble," "Rude Boy for Life," "Cause Ah Riot," and their first single off the album, "Rat Race." All of these tracks lend themselves to crowd participation, which Skindred demand from their audiences.

All we can hope for now is that the next album is not another 4-5 years in the making (although problems with previous labels seem to be gone now). So go forth and purchase Roots Rock Riot, and Babylon too if you've not yet obtained it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Skindred's still rollin', January 7, 2008

Skindred, in my opinion, is a truly a pioneering group in the world of rock music. Sadly not all people readily embrace the blending of musical genres that Skindred has done. Pity, for I believe that their last disk Babylon was the disk of the year at a minimum. It was easily my most played disk for 2 years and I still listen to. RRR is a strong followup with a slightly different feel. A bit more growling and screaming but with unminstakable skindred lyics and killer beats. I was somewhat unsure of the disk the first couple times through, but now it is a regular on all my disk and media players. The more plays it gets, the better it gets.

I would be hard pressed to choose favorite tracks off the disk as it is truly that complete. As I see it, Skindred simply can do no wrong.

This cd kicks! A ton of different riffs. And it's heavier than BAbylon. My favorite track is "Rat Race". If you liked Babylon, you'll LOVE this one. Highly recommended......

5.0 out of 5 stars State of Emergency!!!!, November 9, 2007
This review is from: Roots Rock Riot (Audio CD)
Skindred is back with another fantastic album. Just like their previous album, Babylon, Roots Rock Riot is really great. Hard rock and reggae mixed together - what could be better? Skindred's front man, Benji Webbe (A.K.A. The Dirty Dred), perfectly nails every track with his usual thoughtful and soulful singing fused with his signature metal/thrash patois. Skindred has again provided a work musical art. Pure headbanging enjoyment. I haven't been able to turn it off!!!

AWESOME. I don't think any fans of skindred's first album will be disappointed. I know I'm not. If you're looking for a change from mainstream you really need to check these guys out. They just have impeccable tunes in their head, and their combination of these talents is amazing. At least listen to the songs online or something. This cd has a lot of hard rocking, awesome tunes, and catchy songs. This is sick party music too, it really gets ur blood flowing. I wish people would play this stuff at aprties instead of junk hip hop. Effing sweet.

4.0 out of 5 stars I dont believe in 5 stars...but damn close, July 31, 2009
This review is from: Roots Rock Riot (Audio CD)
Skindred rocks. Period.

This new album, while lacking some of the garage-y-ness of the last album, makes up for it entirely with the more cerebral aspects.

put it this way...im a dirty cook...these guys are "fusion" cuisine, but without any of the negatives that might imply. Nothing feels contrived. Fresh and honest as a jerk chx peanut butter coconut souffle flan could be...really...that good.

also...there is a little bridgey moment in "destroy the dance floor", around the 2 minute mark, that is one of the most rock ass "riffs" ive enjoyed in a while.

to really go out there, i consider tool to be the best band ever. Dave mathews "before these crowded streets" a top 10 album, flow bots bad ass. these guys are up there...apparently Benje, the singer has no vocal limitations.

I day dream a lot...What could Maynard and Benje do with rush's uncle tom...danny on the drums ofcourse...and i'd take claypool too...

any way.

im just gonna say it, if you appreciate good ole fashion, super creative jams, and don't like this album, then you have insecurities not tied to listening to good music

5.0 out of 5 stars Skindred has just moved into my top 5 bands, June 8, 2009
This review is from: Roots Rock Riot (Audio CD)
Now I have to figure out who the other 4 are... lol. Never really thought about a top 5. :) I had their first albumn Babylon which I purchased about a week ago and haven't stopped playing it... well.. until now. I caught Skindred at a show last night and was able to score this CD and had it signed by the band. I will say, I haven't had that much energy at a show since... uh. Well Matisyahu was awesome. Um Bad Brains had me moshin. But Skindred... wow, these guys will command your body, minds, ears, and feet. No really, this crowd was the lamest I've ever seen and I was affraid that Skindred would play like 6 songs and bail asap. Negative. It took them a couple songs until they had the whole place "bouncin" as they like to say.

Anyway, sorry this doesn't explain the CD as much as it does the artist but keep in mind, this band has one of the best stage presentations I think I've ever seen and knowing the music ahead of time only helped when Benji put the the mic to the crowd and watched as at least 1/2 had no idea what was going on but they were all into it. Old and Young, Black and White, Male and Female... It was totally infectious and the band was so positive and so determined to get us energized.

Roots Rock Riot is fantastic... no really, aside from having such a good time I'm still removed enough to say this albumn, played 4 times now, still has my left foot (the one that's not sprained from jumpin like crazy) tappin.

Anyway, i'm going to rest my bones while you stop reading my review and hit the purchase button. You will not be dissapointed with this cd. But like the group said, you will choose to download free music and they can't stop it... but whatever you do, get out to a live performance for ANYTHING. Support the bands you like and enjoy the atmosphere created at a live concert. The best part about it, you create the show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first., January 26, 2009
This review is from: Roots Rock Riot (Audio CD)
I have always loved this band and I'm always impressed with they way they are able to beautifully mix two completely opposite types of music (Reggae, Metal). The first album was awesome but I always felt that it could be a little heavier. Thats exactly what they did with Roots Rock Riot. In all honesty I was not aware that they released a new album till I saw them on tour last weekend with Seven Dust and Disturbed. It has been nothing but a breath of fresh air to me. If you liked the First album buy this one, If you wanted the last album to be heavier buy this one, if you like reggae or Metal buy Roots Rock Riot.
