I had been using the free, limited version of this program for some time and loved it for the ease of use for entering names, pictures and other media as well as sources and references. I purchased the full version because I wanted to take advantage of all the bells and whistles that this program comes with. You can quickly and easily merge individuals and records from different databases into RM5. I've done a lot of research on Ancestry.com and built a sizable family tree using their online service but wanted to keep records of my own at home. I was able to download all the data I had collected on that site in a GEDCOM file which imported seamlessly into RM5 with all the attendant links, media, sources, etc. I'm sure I haven't even scratched the surface of the capabilities of this program yet. Anyone who is looking to start researching their family history would find this program a great help in building their family tree. I highly recommend it!

I was crushed when Windows 7 did not recognize my Family Origins 6.0 genealogy program with its years and years of research. Fortunately, RootsMagic, by the same company as I understand it, had no problem opening my old data files and converting them to this new format. Very pleased with the product, just as I was very pleased with the earlier version. RootsMagic has features like direct internet lookup that I like even better than my old FamilyOrigins program.

Easy to enter and edit your information, and has a wide range of charting. Definitely recommended even for the novice.

So far it works great. A lot of detail and functions available in every screen. We are/were using Family Tree Maker. I had researched products before switching and it seems as though FTM has adopted RootsMagic's screen layouts and abilities. I figured we would benefit more from RootsMagic. It imported our FTM file easily. Nothing appears to be missing. In fact, RootsMagic has put more details in front of you. I'm impressed so far. Compare the two side by side. FTM attempts to throw some extra stuff at you for your purchase, but I didn't find it necessary.

I have used Family Tree software before and found many problems with it. So when I started back doing genealogy I did my research. I liked Root Magic I was able to try it on trial first which I liked very much and I liked the reviews I read. I was so impressed that I bought the whole version. One feature I wish they would include and that is on making charts I find that the divorce (div)does not show up on the charts which I miss from having it on other program. It is a feature that is important in a family tree. Maybe it is my fault it might be available but I haven't figured it out yet. But other then that I love Root Magic software 6....You can't go wrong try the trial first and see for yourself. Very easy for a beginner to use. Found NO glitches as of yet.RootsMagic 6 Family Tree Genealogy Software / Book Bundle

After working three days to enter information, all was lost when RootsMagic said an error was made possibly by encryption.
I was never online yet. This should not have happened at all.

This program took me a bit of time to get used to, but it is really a good program for those doing genealogy research. You can import data from other programs . Be aware, genealogy can be addictive !

If you are like me and have meticulously researched and documented your tree, you want to keep the information safe and organized and accessible in a format that you are comfortable with... as well as have it work on a computer/operating system available a decade or two from now. Problem is that the software developers tinker with their success and usually wind up ruining it. That finally happened with the first software program I started with years ago [Family Tree Maker]. My computer crashed and my older software was no longer compatible with the new 64 bit hardware or Windows 8 operating system. So I bought a new machine and the 'new' FTM software product. After many bi-annual software iterations and versions, FTM's value to me as a genealogist has now vanished. It is clunky beyond belief. This sequence of events lead me to try RootsMagic. Sadly, I've found that RM is really not noticeably better than the current versions of FTM and that the original FTM data [photos, documentations, notes, etc] does not easily translate to RM file forms or gets lost in the shuffle. The basic relationships and key data translates fine, but it was hard to get used to manipulating RM and make it work for me. Although RM appears very capable, I am too set in my ways and lack the patience to make RM software my new best friend. Problem is for PC folks like me is that technologies and operating systems change such that the old genealogy software versions I liked no longer work. Maybe RootsMagic will work for you, especially if you are just starting out on your tree research journey. If they don't tinker with RM in the future, it could be a long term success not unlike the Quicken software franchise. I wound up buying one of the last new computers made [plus a spare fan and HD for future repair parts] that runs Windows 7 for 32 bit machines and now use it exclusively only for my 'old' Family Tree Maker data. It is folly to hope that software companies will someday quit producing 'new' 'improved' 'more capable' 'easier to read screen' versions of their software just to generate sales.

I have enjoyed using this program. It's fairly easy to use but takes a little while to get use to the format.
I used the essentials version, which is a free downloadable version for a couple of years, but wanted some of the features that the full version has.

This requires a lot of time to master. My wife passed away since purchasing it but I recall helping her for weeks.
