5.0 out of 5 stars For the vertical traveller
A really outstanding book! It presumes a very basic level of knowledge and builds your confidence - from the history and making of climbing rope to all the hardware and knowledge needed to descend and ascend. All the techniques are listed and advantages/disadvantages noted for each. There is information for cavers and explorers as well as sportsmen and rescue pros...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
I am sorry to say that I am not impressed by this book at all. I own a speleology school and have been caving for more than 20 years. I purchased a copy for our club library, mainly for our students. I read the book though and was very surprised to find it very USA biased and even to spot some inaccurately presented "facts" (no, guys, the kernmantle rope was NOT invented...

A really outstanding book! All the techniques are listed and advantages/disadvantages noted for each. There is information for cavers and explorers as well as sportsmen and rescue pros. Some of the most interesting passages in the book describe real situations, poor planning, and what happened. If you want information good enough to go out and survive a dangle from a rope, this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars On Rope, April 9, 2002
This is a wonderful book. It shows knots in detail, it shows when and how to use them. We use the book all the time as a training manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for the vertically inclined!, December 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: On Rope (Hardcover)
Padgett and Smith put it all together in one volume. Actually two volumes, as the second edition is now out and between the two there isn't much left to know. If you like hanging out 200 feet above the ground on 11mm static, this is the way to go!

5.0 out of 5 stars Guide to Vertical Caving and Rock Climbing, December 9, 1997
By A Customer
This book is a must for anyone beginning or experienced in caving and ropework of any type. The basics are discussed and illustrated in a clear precise manner. Whether you are rappeling, ascending, rebelaying, rescuing, or just interested in caving there is no better source for any on-rope techniques available. The reason it does not have a 10 rating is that On Rope II has actually bested its predecessor.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible of vertical caving., March 24, 1999
By A Customer
Bruce Smith and Alan Padgett writing from the center of the world of vertical caving, TAG (Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia), bring their experience of "bouncing" the great pits like Neversink, Fantastic and Surprise to the printed page. TAG is the home of America's deepest vertical caves, ranging in depth from 30' to 586' deep.If it is your desire to read the definitive text on rope work in the extreme world of caving this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Buy It!, January 1, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Upon assignment to a certain organization...this book was required reading. I learned why later. Worth ten times the cost, if you glean and apply the material inside. This book has been out for years and does not go "on sale" from what I can see. No matter, buy it at full retail and you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars The bible for climbers, August 12, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: On Rope (Hardcover)
I would not have been able to start my career as a climbing arborist if it were not for this book. This book is a great introduction to ropes and their use for climbing. It is mainly for rock climbers, but a tree climber can learn a great deal from it. After reading it I found The Tree Climber's Companion. The two, together, will serve you quite well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference, April 6, 2008
This is a great reference for anyone working with rope. It's well written with clear illustrations. What I found most valuable was the wealth of safety information. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Reference, June 14, 2007
This book is rated 5-stars because the information contained is absolutely necessary to anybody who climbs and/or works with rope. However, I must say that the information could be organized better, and the quality of writing could also use a little help. In the end, it is still the best "general" book on using rope when your life is on the line.
